My father asked to speak with me alone on a Wednesday evening. I arrived at the family house and followed him to his study.
The room contained the weight of decisions that had been made in it over the years. It smelled like old papers, authority and drugs. I always mentioned the first two but never said anything about the last one.
He sat before I had finished closing the door which made me curious.
Aldric stood when he had something important to say. Seeing him sit meant he was either managing his energy or the discussion called for another form of tact.
I sat across from him. He looked at me for a moment without speaking.
“I want to be clear. This is your investigation and I’m not overriding it.”
“But?”
“But I have been making inquiries.”
My father had sources and relationships that fell outside the structure I inherited. They were built over forty years ago and had no idea if his parallel investigation was a hindrance or help to me.
I held his gaze. “What kind of inquiries?”
“I was looking into the compound used in the fire.”
He recognized it and told me when he first learned of it… thirty years ago.
He took a deep breath and began. There was territorial dispute that had gotten out of hand so badly that it took three packs including ours to get it under control but barely. The compound had been used on the disputed land.
It wasn’t the same exact compound but it messed with the biology of wolves in the area and the incident had been suppressed.
}
“Why?” I said.
“The fallout wasn’t something that could have been managed so it was best it never saw the light of day.”
He looked at the desk. “It seemed that is still the case even today.”
I heard what he wasn’t saying. “You think I’ve made the same error.”
“I’m not talking about you alone.”

I let that sit and he continued. “The knowledge of the compound is limited. Even after three decades not
my folks know about it.”
“How limited?”
“I know of three groups of people. There is a fourth but I’m not entirely sure.”
“What are the three?”
The first was the old pack intelligence that had documentation of the original incident and the chemical team that came up with the compound.
He paused with an unease that was totally out of character for him when it came to the third one; it didn’t escape me.
“The third channel runs through the Silvermoon family network.”
I thought of Elena and her father.
“I know what you are thinking. I’m not talking about Richard or Elena side of the family..”
He looked at me.”I’m talking about the other side. Alyssa’s family”
I said nothing. My first thought was that it meant nothing. The Silvermoon family wasn’t Alyssa. The knowledge came from her family and not her, she might not even be aware of such knowledge.
I noticed how quickly that thought arrived and thought about what I knew.
Alyssa had her family resources at her disposal. She decided to remind distant from her family after Eli’s birth which I chalked down to safety reasons and personal freedom. I didn’t ask about her family because she didn’t bring it up and I hadn’t needed the information at the time.
She had been at the hospital same time with Denise.
I didn’t ask her questions because I had learnt a long time ago that it did the opposite of what was intended and I told myself she was free to make her own decisions.
Sitting across my father, I was caught between two thoughts: I trusted her. I hadn’t investigated thoroughly.
Aldric watched me before he spoke. “I am not saying she was involved.”
“I know.”
“You needed to know the context of your investigation.”
He was right, this crucial bit of information changed the entire scope of the investigation. The investigation would become two different searches. The first one already existed and was pointed toward motive and opportunity. The new investigation would be centered on who had access to classified information.

Alyssa’s family connection didn’t count for anything in the first investigation but it made her a person of
erest in the second investigation.
This was something I hadn’t considered because I was trying to compartmentalize several aspects of my life.
“How long have you known?” I asked.
“About the compound?”
“Yes.”
He considered the question. “Long enough to confirm what I remembered before bringing it to you.”
He always wanted to confirm what he was saying before he told anyone.
“Is this Silvermoon network still running?”
“Yes it is but that network was created a long time ago.”
