Chapter 141

Alyssa POV

The landscape was a nineteenth century drawing of over two meters.

I had been staring at it for over fifteen minutes which was a long time for me but not enough to convince people that I was here for the auction.

Filled with the need to pass off as part of the auction, I kept my gaze on the piece.

The private viewing room afforded me the precious elevation I needed to watch the exits and entrances of the gallery.

Eli sat besides me on the bench with the auction catalogue opened on his knees, scribbling on it with the pencil I gave him.

I stared at the time. Thirty six hours, that was all I had given myself to be here before I returned. My flight was already scheduled for the next afternoon and no one knew I was in the city so far asides Dante.

“Mama.”

I looked at him. He held up the catalogue to show me a drawing he had done in the center.

“Is that you?” I pointed at the taller figure.

He considered the question seriously. “No. That’s you.”

“Am I wearing a crown?” I studied the figure.

“No, that’s your hair.” He mentioned with a slight exasperation that told me it should have been obvious enough.

He went back to the catalogue. I stared at Eli who was completely oblivious of what was happening. I had thought about leaving him behind but I couldn’t trust him with another person especially with those messages I was receiving. I knew he would be safe but I would have worried myself sick.

I turned back to the landscape and thought about tomorrow.

Dante Moretti was not someone I trusted. He was a man ruled by emotion and obsessive, anything he did or say was to his own goal. He had resources but unlike Kieran he could used them without raising any eyebrows and I still needed to tell Kieran before he could deploy them.

Dante would get the date and messages from the sender. I wouldn’t give him anything about Kieran that he would use or anything that would be put Eli in the middle of whatever this was.

Dante’s interest and mine were temporarily aligned but it I understood how dangerous he was.

1/3 The viewing room door had been opened since I arrived. I didn’t register it at first because the staffs came

and went but the door had been opened thrice in the last twenty minutes and nobody had come through

Eli was drawing as I scanned the entire area but found nothing.

I turned and watched Eli continued painting, oblivious to whatever was going on.

My phone rang. I looked at it; it was a video call. I found the timing of the call odd and ignored it for a while.

I almost declined. Something about the way I was still made Eli look up from his catalogue. He glanced at the phone and rested his gaze on me.

“Mama are you okay?”

I forced a smile. “I’m fine sweetie.”

I answered and the screen showed a lobby.

I almost ended the call; my first thought was a misdial, probably somebody walking down the road. I was about to tap the red button when I recognized the marble.

I studied the video some more and I began to pick out more familiar things: I had seen the sculpture in the alcove to the left of the entrance and I recognized the pattern of chairs in the waiting area near the lower gallery. My eyes lit up instantly as it hit me. I was looking at the lobby of the building I was currently

inside.

I realized the call wasn’t coming from outside the city.

I lowered the phone and placed at my face so the camera wouldn’t capture my face.

I looked at Eli who kept drawing and I turned to look at the room door. I stared at the corridor beyond the door into main landing and calculated the distance to the nearest staff member.

Someone was in the lobby and called me. I was on the sixth floor. I clenched my jaw before raising the phone again.

The camera was still pointed at the lobby. The image held steady for some seconds before it began to move. It panned out, turning toward the elevator bank and zoomed in on the electronic display that showed the floor. Ground floor.

The camera moved again and entered the elevator, and I watched the lobby disappear from the frame and the elevator doors close from the inside.

The floor display above the elevator across the lobby changed from G to 1.

I closed the auction catalogue and Eli looked up. “Are we going?”

I looked at the door. The main staircase was the obvious exit and stood at the end of the corridor that led

to the main landing. The secondary exit was the service stairs at the far end of the viewing floor.

The secondary stairs were the route that would not be visible from the elevator.
