The building was still standing. It was the first thing I noticed and realized the building still standing surprised me. The building was damaged not gone.
There were scaffolding that surrounded the walls and most of the windows were boarded up as workers moved around, the steady sound of construction and smell of concrete heavy in the air.
The returns from the investment I had entered came early than the estimated date.
I went inside. The west wing was still cordoned off.
The site manager met me in the main way. He told me the structural survey was completed. The load- bearing sections were intact. The west wing needed substantial reconstruction but it would be finished on time barring any complications as the funds were enough to cover the repairs.
I asked some questions which he answered to my satisfaction before leaving and I continued to the
common room.
Mrs. Adeyemi was already in there.
She had tea prepared, which meant she had known I was coming or someone had told me. With Mrs. Adeyemi, it was hard to tell.
She handed me a cup that was brewed to my taste; I never told her what my preference was.
I sat across from her and stared around. The memories of running I had done countless homework and eaten countless dinners on the table I sat before
This was the room where I had done homework. Where I had eaten more dinners than I could accurately count. When the children had lessons, the sound travelled through the walls into the room.
“You look tired.”
“I came from the university.”
“You know that’s not what I’m talking about.”
I looked at her. She looked at me with a gaze that told me nothing escaped her.
“I’m managing,” I said.
“I know you are. I’m asking about the rest.”
She didn’t press me when I didn’t answer.
Mrs. Adeyemi left her questions to hang in the air which was considerably more effective than asking

them twice, I had realized that over the years.
Juno found me twenty minutes later.

She came into the common room carrying a folder used for artworks. Her voice rang out with childish delight. “I’ve been making things.”
“Can I see?”
She nodded, sitting besides me to carefully open the folder.
The first drawings were from before the fire. It contained the common room and dining area. I recognized Mrs. Adeyemi from the texture and fullness of her hair. I recognized the hallway near the east wing. She moved through them without rushing.
The drawings began to change, the lines and colorings became chaotic. I saw lines and shades that must have been smoke and a large ball of orange. There were tiny figures that stood outside the building and I knew what they represented.
Juno turned the page. There was a bed with a sparsely furnished room. Recognition flickered in my eyes. “That’s the room where I was.”:
“Yes.” She turned the page..
She placed a drawing in front of me without saying anything first.
I recognized the building. She had drawn it from outside. It was a solid drawing and the lines were deliberate.
A figure with spread arms stood in front of the building.
I looked at the position for a moment.
“Why are her arms like that?” I asked.
Juno looked at the drawing. “Because she’s holding it up so it doesn’t fall.”
The common room was very quiet. I studied the figure. Her legs were wide apart, solidly planted on the ground that was colored darker than the rest of the drawing.
I thought about everything I was currently holding.
I thought about the things I knew and had chosen not to confront Kieran because I was still determining what they meant and the investigation I was conducting separately from everyone else.
“It’s a very strong building,” I said finally.
Juno considered this seriously. “I know,” she said. She turned to the next drawing.
The workers were still moving in the background when I came out. One of the scaffolding caught the evening twilight and covered the area in golden silhouette.

stood outside for another moment, taking it all in before I got into the car.
