The bond told me she was focused. It wasn’t a surveillance system, it was more like an emotional gauge that told me how she felt.
Right now, Denise was absorbed in something somewhere across the city.
I felt it grow seem as it conveyed an internal clarity she had when an idea was assembling itself. She was probably at the study group she mentioned.
I was seated in my office with some pack documents that needed my attention but all I could focus on was the bond.
The bond was some weeks old and I was still learning it.
Through it I learnt about the different moods of my wife. I was about to know when she was upbeat and when she was worried or had something on her plate.
I knew she had been off for weeks and kept quiet about it. It was her way to organize things before she brought it up and I was going to let her have the room to sort it.
It was true but I knew it wasn’t the entire truth. I didn’t want to ask her because it would mean that I also explain my secrets too and I didn’t deem myself ready for that conversation.
I knew what I was doing and instantly disliked it.”
I disliked the convenient ability of mine to frame avoidance as patience when it came to issues that would change the course of everything.
Alyssa was different. She never called me out before she quietly disappear, creating enough distance between her world and mine.
Denise hasn’t called me out, already but she noticed. I had seen the way she filtered information and it was a more disciplined version than mine.
I had told myself I would explain Alyssa after the wedding which now became after the ceremony. I realized that at that rate, Denise would never know.
The bond shifted slightly. I felt the bond moved before it settled down. Someone must have made a joke she enjoyed it.
She was happy because she was just being herself. She was probably somewhere surrounded by people who knew nothing about packs and the looming investigation.
She was happy in a room where she nobody saw her anything more than a student at a group study.
The thought gladdened me because she was beginning to live her life on her terms especially after the fire.

My thought was darkened a bit by the realization that loving someone also meant also wanting the parts of
em that didn’t need you.
I stared at my phone and thought about calling her to tell her everything but I texted her Don’t eat before you come home. I’m making dumplings.
I sent it and almost immediately while wondering what I had just done, she replied. That’s a bribe and yes, it’s working.
I stared at the conversation and wondered how two people within just weeks of getting married were able to develop a rhythm without trying.
Nothing from the contract I signed warned me about it, I thought to myself as I returned to the council documents.
The notification arrived at quarter past six. It was a message from Soren and I opened it.
The forensic work on the St. Mira’s scent trace had been completed.
The secondary note that Rhea had found at the scene was a match from one of the samples in the forensic data base.
She had mentioned encountering the scent few weeks ago and I was expecting Lyra’s name to come up. She had the motive, the Cyrus connection and her speedy engagement with Marco.
I suspected that she was the one present in the St. Mira’s storage room within twelve hours of the fire’s
commencement.
The office was quiet as it waited for my next move with bated breathe.
I had been warned me about that family.
I stared at the name again and had more questions than answers. The scent didn’t make her the culprit, it only placed her at the scene. Anything else was me trying to fill in the gaps with answers I didn’t have and I understood that.
I kept thinking about all the reasons she could have been there and couldn’t come up with any good one.
I could feel Denise coming home through the bond.
The study group had ended. She was probably in the car, which meant the warmth through the bond was still present and maintained the same intensity during travel.
She was coming home and had know about the report or how Alyssa’s family was connected to the case.
She did not know that I had spent all afternoon understanding the gap between patience and avoidance.
I looked at the name on the screen.
The bond carried one last warmth from Denise. She was probably talking on the phone to someone or cheerfully greeting a pedestrian or fellow commuter through her window.
