I felt the scent without warning. Priya was in the middle of explaining the merits of restricted capital frameworks. My wolf stirred before my body registered the scent.

I was completely for two seconds which felt longer before returning to the present.

I countered Priya’s last statement. “It’s not a issue of threshold but structure. The question isn’t about the status of the challenger but who benefit from the current interpretation of the framework.”

Priya stared at the page. “That changes the whole section.”

“Yes, it does.”

My wolf prowled in my chest as the study session went on.

After the session was over, Priya asked a question about next week’s material that slowed our journey towards the exit.

Priya had a question about the next week’s material that became a discussion, which became a slower walk toward the exit. A student, Owen walked over to us with a slightly weary look on is face.

“Is there a problem?” I asked him as I saw his countenance.

He scratched his brow as he returned my book. “Do you colour-code everything?”

“Well not everything, just my notes. What’s the matter?”

“That’s something.” He shifted on his feet.

“I enjoy knowing where things are.”

He considered this. “That sounds exhausting.”

My mind went to the messages I had recorded in that folder. “Sometimes it is.”

They turned toward the campus café and I went turned toward the car.

I thought about the forensic report. I had spent the better part of thirty minutes trying not to think about before I gave in.

I remembered it and my wolf responded like it had the first time when I came across the report. I let it do what it wanted, the past few months had told me that it operated on a logic that predated language and interfering with the process never produced results that benefited me.

I looked out the window at the city moving past as the driver took the bridge. It was the longer but smoother ride as the traffic was almost non-existent.

Chapter 144

I walked into garlic and thyme which told me Kieran was at the stove.

Dropping my bag on the couch and kicking off my shoes, I went to the refrigerator to get an appetizer.

“What are you doing?”

“I’m looking for something to eat while I wait.”

“Dinner is twelve minutes away.”

“That doesn’t gauge the ravaging hunger I feel right now.”

“Move away from the fridge.”

I stepped back one step.

He looked over his shoulder. “More.”

I looked beyond him to the kitchen counter.

“What are you looking for? Checking if I added enough ginger?”

“Well you can’t blame me for checking.”

He turned back to the stove. “I’ve added enough ginger.”

I returned to the refrigerator. “I’ll confirm that myself.”

He shifted a bit to make space for me to lean at my favorite spot as I found a leftover piece of bread and closed the refrigerator.

The dumplings were good. I didn’t tell him but he would come to that conclusion the longer I ate without complaints or comments.

He stared at me. “So…”

“It’s enough,” I said.

He refilled my glass while I watched him. The bond told me something was amiss, during dinner he had checked his phone and turned it face-down. I knew he was carrying something and decided not ask, not

even now.

“How was the study group?” he asked.

“Good. I think we’re going to work well together. Priya is stronger on the policy context than I am.”

He nodded.

Between bites I asked him. “And your day?”

Something moved behind his eyes. “Complicated.”

I waited but he didn’t say anything more and the word hung between us.

We cleared the kitchen together. He once argued that making the dinner should exempt from cleaning duties but I wouldn’t have it. After a series of arguments, he reluctantly came around. When we got closer, I felt a warmth that was present enough and not strong enough to be overwhelming.

We held each other’s gaze. The spell broke when he cleared his throat and handed me a plate.

I was awake long after he wasn’t. Something about that scent refused to let me sleep. I tossed about in the bed, my forehead wrinkled with worry. Where have I smelled it?

It wasn’t in the hospital or pack events. The pack events were too recent to be considered.
