James set the folder on my desk without ceremony. “Someone from Paris is coming over to start on Monday.”
“For which project?”
“The merger. They’re sending their own person to run point.”
I opened the folder. “Do we have a name?”
“A. Stone. That’s the name.”
I forced myself not to show any reaction as my eyes shot up. I kept my hand flat against the folder and asked in a completely neutral voice. “What’s the full name?”
“I’d have to check the personnel file.”
“You do that”
He raised an eyebrow but didn’t argue. “Give me twenty minutes.”
“Take your time.”
He left me alone with the paper in my head. I struggled to keep my head from running into the place that I knew it would if I didn’t hold myself.
James came back with a printout. “I have it. Alyssa Stone. She’s a senior consultant with Paris. Her specialty is in cross border integration.”
“Thank you.” I took the paper and set it aside before he noticed how bad I was trying not to react.
“Anything else?”
“No. That’s all.”
He left again. I turned the paper back over.
I didn’t know her. I only had an idea of the woman. I had seen her image in the photograph Dante had sent me and gotten a whiff of her scent on Kieran when he came to visit me in the hospital.
I knew what she looked like but I didn’t know her and that distinction mattered more than I wanted it to.
I called the Paris office some hours later under the pretext of sorting out logistics.
“Could you shed more light on the selection process that you used to arrive at the cqnddua.”

Chapter 147
“Alyssa Stone is the most qualified person for the job.”
“Was she nominated or recommended?”
“She was recommended by a committee but she fought it initially, if I am to be honest.”
I kept my voice even. “Oh?”
“She only accepted the job because there was no one else qualified to go in her stead.”
“I see. Thank you for the clarity.”
I hung up and just stared at the document completely at a loss for words.

I had been steeling myself for the past few weeks that Alyssa whoever she was and wherever she was would return to make her claim. I had been waiting for the confrontation but apparently, she had tried not to come at all.
It would have been easier if she was the antagonistic type. She wasn’t harmless; it made her harder to place, and I hated things I couldn’t place.
I stood up and went to get a cup of coffee.
I told the barista. “Oat milk latte,” almost immediately I changed my mind. “No. Sorry. Black. Just black.”
She looked at me like I was thinking about something more important than coffee. “You sure?”
“I’m sure.” I said with a confidence that didn’t resonated, paid and stepped aside.
Someone from the finance department came over. “Heard the French team’s sending someone for the merger. Any idea what the person would be like?”
“I’m sure we’ll find out.”
She had no idea that response was more for me than for her.
I went to the group meeting instead of hearing straight home. Marcus was arguing that the case study’s timeline didn’t hold up, and he was wrong. It felt good to be right about something for once no matter how silly it was.
“It doesn’t work because the acquisition happened before the regulatory filing. Refer to page four.”
He checked. “Huh. Okay, fair.”
“How do you even remember page numbers?” Someone’s incredulous voice rung out.
“I don’t know. I just do.”
Priya closed her laptop. “Care to join us for lunch?”
I almost said no without thinking about it before I changed my mind.

“Yes,” I said instead. “Count me in.”

For the next one hour, I was a regular student slurping spicy noodles, talking about a professor we disliked.
It didn’t last, but it was real while it lasted.
At home, staring at my laptop for almost thirty minutes. I was thinking about telling Kieran.
