Eli was arranging his toasts as he seated on the dinning table. He bundled them into rectangles before shaking his head and scattering them. He made them into triangular shapes and still wasn’t satisfied about
the outcome.
I was half-watching him and half-scrolling through my inbox when my phone rang.
“It’s Marguerite, from Paris. I hope I’m not calling too early.”
“You are but I’m guessing it’s urgent.”
“There is a situation with the Nightshade Collaboration. I’m sure you have heard rumors.”
“I have.”
“It’s official. We need someone over there for the duration and we want that person to be you.”
“There has to be someone else.”
“There is but they don’t have your credentials or expertise.”
“Marguerite”
She cut me off before I could finish. “Just hear the terms before you say no.”
Eli looked up from his toast, his eyes twinkling. “Is that Grandma?”
I pressed the phone to my shoulder “No, baby. It’s work. Finish your food.”
Eli murmured. “It’s a square now. I don’t want a square.”
“You will eat it.”
He sighed and reluctantly took a bite, the face he made would have been funny if not for the call I was on.
I continued the call. “Where would this be, exactly?”
She told me the name of city; of course it just had to be.
“And how long will I be there?”
“Six months, possibly longer if the merger phase extends.”
“What about my son? He’s in school.”
“That’s a small issue. The company is willing to relocate both of you with full benefits.”

Chapter 146
“Who do report to? The Exco team or is there a liaison?”
“It a hands-on integration role.”
Of course. This just keeps getting better and better. I closed my eyes. “I need to think about it.”
“Of course. But we need an answer by tomorrow.”

I hung up and found Eli watching me carefully. He always did have an uncanny knack for knowing when something concerned him.
“Are we going somewhere?”
“Maybe. It’s only work.”
“Can I bring my toys?”
“Sure thing baby.”
He smiled wildly and attacked the toast with much more enthusiasm. I was pouring him a cup of juice when I realized that I had agreed without saying yes.
I spent the next hour trying not to go. I opened the company directive and went to the analysts section. I did a deep dive on them and found the best two analysts. I typed a recommendation and attached their successful projects to it. My hand hovered over the send button for a while before I deleted the message.
She didn’t have the language certifications and the second candidate had never been in charge of a large account such as this. I already knew that before I opened the file; I’d known it during the phone call.
Damn it.
I had spent three years deliberately avoiding anything that would place me and Kieran in the same orbit. I had turned down four promotions because it would have placed me under his direct command.
I couldn’t keep saying no and pausing my life because he was standing in the way.
In a bid not to feel overwhelmed, I began to make a list about the logistics of moving back.
I wrote Kieran at the bottom of the page out of muscle memory. I stared at the name; he wasn’t a logistics item. He wasn’t supposed to be on this list at all.
I called Marguerite back that afternoon. “I’ll take it.”
“Thank God. I’ll have HR send the documentation tonight.”
“I’ll need the organization chart. I want to understand the reporting structure.”
“You will get it within the hour.”
Marguerite and I talked for another ten minutes about visas and start dates.

Chapter 146
After hanging up, I sat at the kitchen table for a long time without moving.
