I was thinking about the implications of the merger on existing chain of command on my way to the marketing department.
With Alyssa coming in from Paris who was going to have the final say?
I needed to make a note for Emerson and was thinking of the contents when I turned the corner and walked into a woman coming out of the east conference room at the same moment,
Emerson’s assistant was beside me. The woman’s assistant was beside her. They made the introductions quickly without any ceremony.
Mrs. Nightshade, Ms. Stone.
Ms. Stone, Denise Nightshade.
Alyssa extended her hand and I shook it. My wolf was still, the way it became when it was investigating something.
The investigation finally bore fruit. Beneath the fragrance, suppressors and composure she wore, was the same scent that my wolf had picked up at the hospital corridor, on Kieran’s jacket. The omega undertones of a wolf.
The investigation went further than I expected as it travelled to the forensic report. Distinctive secondary
note.
I thought about the picture at the airport and how she had the airs of a woman who expected Kieran to be there. Everything slowly fell into place as I kept my face neutral,
“I understand you’re running point for Paris.”
She held my gaze. “That’s right. I do have an observation to point out. It concerns the project structure.”
“Please by all means.”
She gave me a slightly different angle on the same reporting issue I was already thinking about.
“Both regional directors are listed as decision authorities,” she said. “If operations and strategy each have final sign-off, We will spend more time on approvals conflicts than actually working.”
“The original structure was designed to make them equal. A compromise of some sorts.”
“Such compromises causes unnecessary delays and inefficiencies.”
I agreed with her. “Yes, they do.”

I was watching her while she spoke. She spoke who the air of an expert who was comfortable pointing out
ues on a project to her superiors. She was good at her job; I understood why she had been recommended and why she came despite fighting the recommendation. She knew how good she was.
I had a solution. “We can make one office the sole decision maker and the other, an advisory role.”
She nodded. “Or designate approval authority by project phase. Strategy get final say on planning and Operations get final say on execution.”
I thought about it. “I like your suggestion more.”
She looked at her assistant briefly. “I’ll send over a document this afternoon.”
I nodded. “I’d like to see it before it goes to Emerson.”
“I’ll send it directly.”
Neither of us said anything else. Our assistants had been taking notes.
“Good day. Mrs. Nightshade.” She acknowledged me before she left with her assistant.
I watched her as she made her way down the hall. Nightshade. Not Luna or Denise. I got your message loud and clear. Ms. Stone.
The microwave in the executive kitchen grumbled as I walked in.
Andrea was standing in front of it with her arms crossed. “It’s doing the thing again.” she
“What thing?”
“The thing that sounds like it’s throwing a tantrum rather than heating my food.”
I examined the machine, and pressed the buttons with more pressure than she had but it continued its
tantrums.
“How was the new consultant?” Andrea asked.
“Competent,” I said.
Andrea looked at me. “That sounds like a barb.”
I thought the fact that had Alyssa found a better solution to a problem I had already identified.
“It wasn’t,” I said.
Andrea gave me a look as the microwave finally started heating the food.
On my way from the marketing department, I took a detour and passed through the East Wing.
Alyssa, her assistant and a junior member of the Nightshade analytics team were huddled over a laptop. She pointed at something on the screen which the analyst acknowledged and made a correction.

The meeting at three included Kieran and Alyssa was also present. Alyssa and Kieran addressed each other
th last names. They were too formal, the way people did when they didn’t want to make a personal history obvious.
Kieran had been carefully neutral through the bond and I matched his energy too.
