Chapter 150.
Alyssa POV
“I want the blue Mickey mouse cup.” Eli’s voice had an edge to his voice.
I muttered under my breath. It’s too early in the day for all this.

I had packed the red cup because Eli had accepted it without complaint for four months and I didn’t think of much except this morning he decided the blue cup was the only acceptable option.
I stared at my watch, putting my foot down meant going late to work and that wasn’t an option for me. It took all the negotiating skills I had as Eli drove a hard bargain. Kids negotiations were tougher than multimillion mergers, who would have thought?
I signed in at reception while I held Eli with my free hand. I knew it wouldn’t be long before he runs off to examine something that piques his curiosity. The scanner on the table enthralled him as he watched it with focused interest.
The guard gave him a small warm smile. “That’s for bags.”
Eli held up his small bag. “Including mine?”
The guard considered this. “Yes. To check if there are dangerous things inside. You don’t have anything inside there like that, do you?”
Eli placed the bag on the belt with great seriousness and waited for a few seconds as the scanner processed it. He picked up on the other side.
He beamed. “Thank you,”
The guard gave him a salute. “No problem.”
We continued toward the elevator as my thoughts ran after I just watched. What just happened? Eli used to be wary of strangers but it was hard to tell seeing him with that guard.
Eli stared at the portraits with the same methodical interest he had given the security scanner. We got to the elevator and two employees were already inside.
We got in. Eli stared at the elevator controls as I pushed the floor number. He imitated the humming of the doors as it closed.
He pointed at the wall. I looked at him. “Papa.”
Everything inside me stopped. He didn’t shout it but he said it with the clear confident tone of a kid that knew what he was talking about. I didn’t bother turning because I knew they heard it.
I felt the air turn charged as they processed what they had heard.

spoke with the tone and edge that I had practiced for a while. “He says that about tall men.”
I looked at Eli. “Say building.”

Eli stared at me for a while searching for something. It was clear he understood that something had changed after he spoke.
His voice was clear. “Building.”
I kept my head straight as the first person relaxed and turned their attention to their phones.
The elevator continued upward. The second person studied the floor display with the fixed attention of someone who wanted to forget what he had said.
They both got out when the elevator got to the third floor. I got out at the fourth floor.
I took Eli to the small bathroom off the main corridor, I noticed it was quite empty during mid-morning I set down and he started fiddling with the paper towel dispenser
He immediately became interested in the paper towel dispenser. I turned on the tap as I watched my reflection. My face was completely neutral and blank, something that I had taken years to practice. It was a complete contrast to my breathing.
“You knew this would happen,” I said.
Eli had successfully extracted a paper towel and was examining it with concentration.
I knew when I took this job it was going to be difficult. I knew a lot of effort would be needed to maintain the professional distance I was determined to uphold.
I had not accounted for portrait walls.
I had not accounted for Eli becoming old enough to process and store a face from a photograph and produce the word he had learned to associate with it. I had accounted for everything but as always there was that little thing waiting on the corner to scatter the even best laid of plans.
Of course he knew Kieran’s face. Eli found a sticker from the auction house week on my briefcase. It was a small yellow star the concierge had given him. He had pulled it off and was trying to put it on his shirt.
It was peeling at the edge. I crouched beside him and pressed it flat against the fabric.
He looked at the star, completely pleased with the result. He had no idea what he had just done with the word he uttered so casually.
That was the problem with kids, they didn’t follow any plan, just did they wanted.
I looked at myself in the mirror again as I got myself under control again.
We came out of the bathroom and ran into my assistant was in the corridor.
She glanced at Eli and then me. “Everything alright?”
