I checked Alyssa’s messages to me from her office line. Nothing looked out of place. She answered promptly and correctly when I asked questions and her questions never strayed from professional grounds.
I opened messages from her older line. There was no new messages so I began to scroll up, reading old messages. We somehow managed to form our shorthand and vocabulary, keeping messages to the essentials. Her silence coincided with her arrival in town.
I knew what she was doing but I still sent her a message. We need to talk.
I stared at the phone before dropping it. I spent the following hour recalling what I knew about Dante.
I remembered the certainty in his voice when he spoke to Denise at the wedding reception.
Why did she go to Dante? She had resources outside her family name. She had told me about the harassment and then instead of coming to me for help, she went to Dante. The same Dante who almost disrupted my wedding. She even asked him to keep it a secret from me.
I needed to know why. I called James into my office and he came in with a folder. ” There has been two meetings between them, the first was the hospital corridor and the second at his office which lasted forty minutes. We had no surveillance”
“Any thing to note before or after the meeting?”
James laid the page flat. “Nothing new. He arrived the same way in his private car and she met him at the office.”
Three weeks ago, when she stopped answering my messages.
“Anything else?” I said.
“Not conclusively. We know they met but we don’t know what was discussed.”
I closed the file.
James picked up the coffee that had turned cold before leaving the office.
I sat with what I had and worked through the possibilities. Dante or Alyssa may had made contact first, it didn’t matter. I was interested in what terms or favours were traded or exchanged.
It didn’t make sense: Alyssa choosing the protection of a man who had made a fool of himself.
Alyssa did not make selections carelessly; there was something else attached to it, there had to be or the situation was simpler than I was making it.

She had chose Dante because she didn’t want to come to me and still accepted the position in my firm.
I sent another message. Why Dante? I saw the message was read and delivered but she didn’t reply.
I tugged at my tie as I glared at the phone. I wasn’t angry at her but at myself because I thought I had handled it probably.
I kept telling myself that I had been managing things properly when everything pointed to the contrary.
Denise came into the study at half past eight and I felt the room change instantly. She had her textbooks under her hand. She dropped the books on the book and stared at a tab she held in her hand.
She spent a serious amount of time trying to determine where it had originally been.
I watched her sort through them. “Do you actually need all of those?”
She looked at the tabs. “Yes.”
“Why do you need them?”
“Because it helps me find everything I need.”
She found the page the tab belonged to and pressed it flat against the textbook. She sat across from me and opened the textbook.
I felt her concentration oozed through the bond as she buried herself in her books.
She finally looked up after a while. “Long day?”
“Something like that.”
She nodded and turned another page. After a few minutes, she raised her head. “Do you want tea?”
I looked at her. “Yes.”
She left the study. I heard her in the kitchen as she moved about making tea. The bond did its thing again: I felt her through the wall.
I checked my phone while she was in the kitchen, still no reply from her. The two things I tried so hard to keep separate were now in the same space and there was nothing I could do except…I looked at the door. Should I tell her about it?
Thinking about it, I played out the scenario. She would listen before asking questions before heading off to process everything I told her. When she was certain she understood everything, she would ask the question I had been avoiding. Why didn’t you tell me? I had no good answer to that question.
I heard the sound of water being poured into a jug. I was running out of time and I understood that completely.
I will tell her. I had to tell her.
