Alyssa POV
Three weeks in and I knew the building the way a stranger knew a city well enough to stop using maps I knew which elevators were empty during the morning and evenings when workers clocked out.
I knew the top floors were empty by five pm and the cafeteria emptied around forty minutes after break.
Knowing a building intimately meant being aware of the gossips, scandals that moved under the currents of professionalism.
I overhead two assistants in the coffee room the other day.
“How did she become Luna so fast?”
“She’s Kieran’s wife is she not?”
“I didn’t mean it that way.”
I heard a cup set down. “How did you mean it then?”
I walked away without waiting to hear the rest but it didn’t leave my head.
Over the day, I heard different versions of the same question. Someone in the restroom wondering where Denise appeared from.
Passing through the office space, I overheard a junior staff saying “An omega overseeing much of the operations is highly unusual.”
The other voice corrected him. “As unusual as it might be, the only that matters is she’s good at her job.”
It wasn’t done with malice. The questions and comments were simply the curiosity of staff wondering about the sudden rise of someone they knew as a total stranger.
I could have put an end to the questions about her origins, status and role in the company; I had enough rank and influence to, but I didn’t.
I went back to my office, opened my laptop and drafted three feedback to emails that were pending in my inbox.
After a while, that conversation I overheard came to my head and I wondered if I would say anything if someone said that to her face.
The answer I expected to arrive easily didn’t. Denise had been nothing but professional with me when she had everything right not to be. She hadn’t confronted me at all.
So why did leaping to her defense feel like more than it should have?

Chapter 153
I thought of who she was and she didn’t fit into any of the boxes I created.

She was Kieran’s wife and Luna which was true but she was more than that. She wasn’t an obstacle or an enemy but to my frustration she was becoming a person who had a life that existed outside of Kieran.
I had been actively trying not to think of her in that light. I checked the time, the canteen was usually empty by this time and I made my way down there.
Denise was at the counter, a kettle already set.
I stopped at the door and she looked up.
“Do you want one?” she asked.
“Sure. Thank you.”
There was no hidden meaning or threat behind her words. She moved easily through the kitchen like she owned it and then I remembered she did. It was harder than I expected, watching her.
“She poured a cup for me. “How’s the integration going?”
“Slower than expected but then again it is expected.”
I nodded. “James said the same thing about the last one.”
“He’s not wrong.”
She leaned against the counter. “The building can be quite hectic during the closing.”
“I noticed that the first week. I leave earlier now.”
“That’s smart of you.”
We settled in a uneasy silence that lasted for several seconds.
She set down her cup. “How long will you be here for the assignment?”
I looked up.” The assignment is for six months but the way things go, it can be more.”
“Don’t tell me you are going to be living in hotels till then?”
I watched her carefully. “I have gotten an apartment already.”
“That’s good. Hope it’s suitable. I know some good houses in the northern side of the area if you ever feel the need to move.”
I said my thanks. There was no malice beneath the words and that was what made it unbearable.
I almost her a question but I changed my mind at the last moment. Do you like it here?
I didn’t ask the question because I had no idea what to do with the answer she might had given.
