I knew something was amiss the moment Elena entered the house without her saying a word. She always had something to say: either about her day or something about the weather but she didn’t this time. She sat down and faced me squarely with a set jaw.

Her voice was cool but serious “We need to talk.”

I nodded and leaned forward.

She continued. “It’s been three months, Dante.”

I knew what she was talking about but I still ignorant. “Three months since what?”

Her nostrils flared a bit. “Since the ceremony was supposed to happen. Everyone has been asking me questions and I don’t have an answer.”

I began delicately. “Work’s been complicated. The Nightshade situation—”

“Has nothing to do with our situation. Is there anything you need to tell me?”

I sat with that question longer than I should have.

Being honest meant telling her about Denise and not the abridged version. It would mean admitting seeing her bonded to Kieran affected me than I was willing to admit.

It would also mean telling her about the secret deal I made with Alyssa and her conditions before she accepted my help. It was too much. I stared at Elena for a long time, her jaw worked furiously and I could see the rage she tried to control blazing behind her eyes.

She wasn’t going to take anything but the truth and I couldn’t give her the truth not without aggravating everything.

I swallowed. “I’ve been distracted and I’m sorry about that. I’ll fix it.”

Elena looked at me for a long moment. “That’s it? That’s all I get? That’s all you have to say?”

“Elena-”

“I want you to know something: I’m done waiting for you to be ready.”

“I know.”

“You have until the end of the month. We either go through with the ceremony or you tell me whatever is going on. But this…can’t just continue like this.”

“Elena, I do want-”

“Don’t say anything unless you mean it.” She rose to her feet and left, closing the door quietly as she left.

I stood at the window for a long time after she left.

Without meaning to, the wedding came to my mind. It was vivid, it was going according to plan till I showed up and did what I did.

I closed my eyes to push away the images of that day. It wasn’t something I was proud especially as I had been asking Elena to wait for me for three months.

My phone buzzed with a message from the investigator. File attached as requested.

I almost forgot about it. I opened the laptop at the desk instead of the couch.

I’d started an inquiry of what happened at St Mira. From my old.contacts who owed me favors, I knew the rarity of the accelerant used in the fire. Alyssa was involved in this but I didn’t know how. I turned to the last page on the report and a name caught me by surprise.

It was expected. I know it wasn’t an outsider or a hired specialist with no connection to any of us. The accelerant meant the arsonist was aware of wolves and not many people had that knowledge and skill to act with that knowledge. The name made sense, it was too close to home and nobody would have thought to look in that direction.

I checked the source line again and again. The report was too crucial and the implications damning enough to warrant another cross examination. After I had checked the umpteenth time and realized it wasn’t an error, I sat there for a long time with the laptop open.

Kieran was running an investigation into the fire and who was behind it. I knew that much from the whispers that came out his channels and how far he had gotten. He had no idea I was also running the same investigation or how much farther I had come. I had something that I was sure as hell he didn’t have.

My head begun wheeling. I could call him and tell what I had found, it would definitely speed up his investigation at least by a considerable margin. Some part of me felt I should, regardless of what happened between us seeing as innocent lives were on the line.

I thought about telling Elena and shook my head. It was a bad idea, it would come off as honesty on my part but it would be proof to her that I had been worried about someone else’s life instead of sorting out mine.

I thought about holding onto what I had found. I could leep investigating till I learnt more before anyone else knew what I had.

Another silent thought came up before I could shut down. I could use it as leverage against Kieran, if the need ever arose.

I thought about Alyssa’s insistence not to use her against Denise and didn’t like how easily my mind had gone there.

I closed the laptop and looked back out at the window.

Elena gave me the end of the month to figure out my stand in life and now, I had another decision to
