The florist spent the better of an hour trying to talk Denise into different floral arrangement/I was the reluctant vase holder as I trailed behind her as she browsed different designs and set up.
I was almost at my wits end when she settled on finally. “This one looks good for the council table. I know for certain that Rosaline will still fuss regardless.”
I studied the flower. “And how did you arrive that conclusion?”
“Well she raised a storm about the last three I picked and this one looks nothing like them.”
I raised my eyebrow. “That doesn’t make any sense at all.”
“It does to me and that’s all that matters. You could do well to bring your own flowers next time.”
I chuckled and felt the warmth glow of her laughter from the bond. The florist packaged the flowers and we headed out. On our way out, she told me about that a professor that assigned five hundred pages of reading for the semester.
I held the door for her. “Five hundred? That seems like a whole lot. Does he think people got nothing else to do?”
“She actually. And
it’s not a lot for the semester.”
“I think it is.” I chimed back.
“That’s because you never did any homework in college I guess.”
“Ouch. That was a low blow.” I said in mock pain.
Her eyes took on a slight haze. “All is fair in love and war.”
I smiled and accepted my defeat graciously. It was, by every measure, an ordinary afternoon.
We entered the company still engaged in conversation and oblivious to everything else that was happening around. The atmosphere shifted and my wolf reacted before I did.
It picked out Alyssa coming from the far end of the lobby and I saw the top of his head before I saw him: Eli. I went completely still; it was too late to do anything,
We were on the same path, destined to run into the each other. It was to late to change course without making obvious to everybody including her that I was deliberately avoiding her.
Of course! It just had to be. Let’s get this over with then.
Alyssa saw us and for a second I saw through her mask before she rearranged it again. She had used that

mask even in situations that mattered less than this. She locked her eyes on me, prepared for any
tcome.
I couldn’t dwell on it because Eli finally saw me and his face did what I couldn’t afford to do.
His face lit up with the joy of recognition, still untouched by the dynamics of the world.
My instincts roared with one thought: go to him.
Alyssa moved almost immediately; she scooped him up, whispering something into his ears. I was out of earshot but had an idea of what she told him; his countenance shifted too.
“Good afternoon”
I returned her greeting. “Good afternoon.”
She looked at Denise. “Luna.”
Denise was pleasant enough to be genuine. “Ms. Stone, how’s the integration project coming along?”
“Slower than expected.”
“Which is expected.”
She cocked her head towards Eli. “I’ll let you be on your way. I have to get him his lunch before he starts throwing a fuss.”
Denise acknowledged. “Of course.”
Alyssa nodded once to both of us before leaving.
I watched Eli and held his gaze till Alyssa adjusted his position in her hands, breaking his line of sight.
Then the doors closed behind them and the lobby continued its mundane pace. It looked like nothing extraordinary had happened but that wasn’t the case for me.
I looked at Denise; she was the still the same and hadn’t shifted away from me but I could feel the change in her through the bond. Before Alyssa, there was an ordinary warmth of a couple just existing, now it was deliberately neutral, the way a room goes quiet when someone closes a door on purpose.
I had spent enough time with her to recognize her patterns. I knew when she was silent and when she withdrew; this wasn’t silent. This was the second time she was maintaining this neutrality.
I studied her profile on our way to the entrance. All through the walk, she kept her gaze straight and never glanced in my direction. She was completely composed, too composed. A thought slowly crystalized into a conclusion while watching her. She knows something,
The extent of what she knew began to eat me. Had she connected Eli’s face to mine? How much did she know? The frustration of not knowing what she knew was worse than any accusation she could have hurled at me.
