I always knew that first conversation with Aldric was just the ice breaker and not the conclusion. He didn’t give information carelessly. If he had stopped halfway when we spoke last, it was probably he was still investigating and he detested giving theories or opinions rather than facts.
I had known the second half of the conversation was still due. I had been anticipating it so I wasn’t surprised when I received the summons to his house.
“You came alone.” It was more of a question than a statement. He closed the door behind me after I walked
“You said there was more.”
“I said there was a complication. There is a bit difference between what was said and what you heard.”
He pointed his desk. “Sit. This will take a moment to explain properly.”
I waited for him to begin, over time I had learnt that he did things when he wanted and prompting him, only made him stubborn to prove he moved at his own will.
I looked at the portrait on the table, it had been there for as long I remembered.
He cleared his throat and began finally. “The Stone clan has a connection to the Silvermoon that is very
old.”
My eyes shot up. “What do you mean connection?”
“Four generations ago, there was a mating alliance that bonded the families. It was dissolved and kept buried as sanctioned by the pack laws as at that time.
He folded his hands. “The alliance ended but the bloodline didn’t.”
“Meaning what, exactly?”
“Politics can alter or dissolve alliances but it can’t undone the biological bonds that has been created already. The best the pack can do is stop talking about it.”
I turned it in my head for a moment. “Is this relevant to the investigation or is it about something else?”
“I’m telling you this because knowledge being that compound and the scent your people found are from the same source.”
I went very still.
He continued with the same calm way he mentioned things that were devastating. They aren’t different strands of investigation but two ends of the same strand.”

I had spent the last few weeks treating the compound and the scent as two different things when they
ren’t. Now I could get two for the price of one.
“Whose line” I asked even though I knew the answer to that question.”
“Alyssa Stone?”
“Her mother’s line actually. At least according to the records.”
“Could you repeat that again?” I asked cautiously.
“It was before her time. Three generations is a long time. I don’t see them passing it down especially when it’s something they want buried. So far, there is nothing linking her to the investigation.”
He held my gaze. “The knowledgeable came from that line. I’m sure of it. Deliberately or not, that’s what I can’t say.”
“That’s quite the distinction you have there.”
“It’s honest, better to have that than to work your investigation on a simple answer that might be false.”
I understood what he had done, drawing the line so clearly that I wouldn’t make the mistake of crossing it even in my head.
I remained still and started thinking about the pieces.
I thought about St Mira and how something that shouldn’t be possible was used as an accelerant in a fire. How the marker and knowledge can from her family and what her role in the whole situation was. Speaking of her, she was three weeks into a six-month assignment and shared the same building with Denise on a daily basis.
I knew none of it proved anything. I remembered telling my father that connection wasn’t the same as involvement but I couldn’t help but feel apprehensive about the entire timing. It was too eerie to call it
coincidence.
My mind went to the un-replied but read messages I had sent over time. She had read the last message but there had been no reply in days.
Before tonight, I assumed the reason she stayed away was to ensure there was a distance between her and I but now it was also possible the silence meant something else. She knew something and wasn’t willing or didn’t know how to share what she knew.
I didn’t know which and that was the worst of it.
I thought about Dante next because I couldn’t think of Alyssa without him popping up especially after the two meetings between them according to James. There was a record of the first one but there was no record the second happened except the fact that Alyssa was seen heading into Dante’s office and Dante himself had arrived later.
There was nothing to suggest that Alyssa and Dante were working together. Besides Aldric just spent the last few minutes warning me about drawing conclusions from evidences without the right context.
