Chapter 160

Denise and I were in the kitchen but we weren’t saying anything to each other; the silence was heavy with the things we haven’t said to each other.

I felt she was holding something back through the bond and I was sure she felt likewise but nobody made the move to break the ice.

“You’re distracted,” she said, not looking up from the counter.

“I have a lot on my mind.”

“I noticed.”

Neither of us pushed further. That had become its own kind of agreement between us.

Then the front door opened without a knock and without turning, I knew who it was.

Rosaline had a key but she never let herself inside the house unless it was a hundred on a scale of ten with regards to the urgency of the matter.

Denise’s eyes popped. “Rosaline, what a surprise to see you.”

“I should have called ahead.” My mother crossed the room and gave her a hug before leaning back to watch her.. “You look well. How is school coming along? You are fine right?”

“Mostly. I’m drowning in reading, but everything else is golden.”

“Good. That’s good.”

Then she looked at me before she glanced at the door and I got the message.

Denise saw it too and began to gather herself, already moving toward the hall. “I have notes to finish

anyway.”

She was out of the door and I noticed she didn’t need a word to understand when to leave.

My mother stood near the window, crossed her arms and stared out the window of my study.

Oh boy! It’s going to be one of those.

I clenched my jaw and walked in, waiting for her to begin. I didn’t wait long.

“Alyssa Stone is in the city,” she said.

“Yes she is.”

She turned to face me fully. “And what are you going to do about it?”

Chapter 160

“About what, exactly?”

“This is not the time to be cheeky, Kieran.”

I shot back. “She is here on professional grounds alone. She didn’t even want to be here and went as far as demanded a replacement but there was none. And yes, I confirmed it”

“A woman like Alyssa doesn’t go where she doesn’t want to go.”

“You haven’t the faintest idea about her.” It came out flatter than I meant it, but I didn’t take it back.

While my mother knew Alyssa’s family history, I knew Alyssa as a person and I wouldn’t allow my mother mistake one for the other.

She studied me for a moment; something shifted behind her eyes. “No, I know her family.”

Something in her voice told me she wasn’t here to just talk about Alyssa assignment to the company. “I know what her mother’s line did to two packs before ours.”

I watched her with a curious expression. “What are you talking about?”

She held my gaze steadily. “I’m talking about history you have no idea about.” I have never agreed with your father about his timing when it comes to telling you what you need to know.”

“Rosaline-”

“Two packs, Kieran. I’ll tell you all you need to know about them, when the time is right but not tonight.”

Her voice stayed level, careful. “I need you to understand the Stones are not to be trifled with and they have left a trail of destruction.”

I stood very still as I remembered the various pieces of information Aldrich had given me: the dissolved alliance, sealed documentation, the link between the compound and the scent.

My father said there was a connection and my mother was saying the connection had dangerous. precedents

“Does Father know this?” I asked.

“Some of it. He collects information like a headmaster before he sieves through it.” She let that sit.

Rosaline said. “You do and you need to talk to Alyssa Stone. You need to understand exactly what her family carries before you decide what any of this means going forward.”

She uncrossed her arms. “I didn’t come here to punish you, Kieran but because I’m tired of watching you try to hold all of this alone, badly, while people who love you already know more than you think they do.”

I didn’t answer. I had no answer for what she had just told me.

She reached out, briefly, and touched my arm the way she had touched Denise’s a few minutes earlier. She carried the same warmth despite the war path she was on.
