Chapter 175

Kieran POV

11:43am. I was in the back seat with Eli who was still dazed when James turned around from the front with his phone already extended toward me. “You need to see this.”

The screen showed a static frame before it panned out to reveal an industrial complex illuminated by grey lighting with a concrete column. A crease burrowed deep into my temple as I observed the restraints, wiring, a timer counting down along the bottom edge.

Then I saw Denise. I felt my chest rip open before I could stop it. My hand tightened on the seat as my wolf threatened to break free and run towards wherever this had happened.

I took several breaths as I calmed myself. Eli shifted towards to the phone, curious about what was on the screen. I angled it away without saying anything so he couldn’t see. He didn’t fight me on it as he was till shaken about what happened in the morning to argue about anything.

I kept my arm around him and made myself look at the screen again over the top of his head.

The moment passed and I was in control once again, I studied the frame coldly. The column was old, ceiling rusted and it appeared to be an abandoned warehouse that had been decommissioned for years given the state of the walls I could see. There was only one exit so far I could see. The device was attached to both women in a way I couldn’t fully ascertain from the phone screen.

The weak illumination suggested a skylight rather working power. I noted everything because that was the only thing standing between me and simply losing my mind in the back seat of this car.

The phone buzzed in my other hand.

Location. A pin dropped a moment later. A clear instructions followed: Come alone, now.

The fourth message came through before I’d finished reading the third. Both alive. One leaves.

The air in the car went very still. James was already talking before I’d fully absorbed it. “This doesn’t end well in any scenario for you. We send a tactical unit in first to secure a perimeter, we-”

“They said alone.”

“It’s a trap. They are counting on you walking in without backup.”

He wasn’t wrong and I knew it. Everything about this scenario was built to strip away every tactical advantage I had.

I watched the broadcast loop again on his phone and stared at Denise’s face on the frame for a second before the camera cut away.

She wasn’t crying or pleading into the camera. Her expression was flat, the particular stillness her eyes took when she was focusing on a solution for a problem.

She was brainstorming and somehow that steadied something in me that James’s tactical objections hadn’t managed to touch.
