DENISE

I went to the kitchen at eight because the alternative was lying in the guest room listening to my own thoughts, which had been doing circuits since six and showed no signs of stopping.

Kieran was already there.

This had become the pattern over the past two weeks without either of us naming it as a pattern-him present in the kitchen in the morning with the particular focused efficiency of someone who had already been awake for a while, me arriving shortly after and finding the coffee made and something on the stove and the quiet of it comfortable enough that I had stopped noticing how comfortable it had become, which was its own kind of information.

He looked up when I came in.

“Sit,” he said. “Five minutes.”

Isat.

He was making eggs again-the same focused competence, the same absence of fuss about it. I watched him for a moment and thought about how different this was from the mornings at Blackwood Enterprises, where I had eaten at my desk or not at all, where breakfast had been something that happened to other people in better circumstances.

The eggs were good. They were always good. I had not yet determined whether this was skill or whether he was simply incapable of doing things badly; which was a question I was keeping in view.

‘You slept,” he said, setting the plate in front of me..

‘Reasonably,” I said, which was true in the way that six hours of interrupted sleep was technically a night’s rest if you weren’t being

precise about it.

He sat across from me with his own plate and his coffee and the morning paper folded beside it, which he never read at the table out always brought to the table, a habit I had catalogued without commenting on. The morning opened the way the good mornings had started to open-without requirement, without the performance of two people being pleasant at each other.

I was eating when his phone lit up on the counter.

He saw it at the same moment I did. The screen faced upward, which it didn’t always-he was careful about that, the particular carefulness of someone who handled sensitive communication regularly and had built the habit of screen-down into automatic behavior. This morning the habit had lapsed.

The name on the screen was one word.

‘Alyssa.*

Kieran went still.

Not visibly-not in the way that would read to most people as stillness. But I had been in proximity to him for weeks and I had learned his register, the specific quality of his attention when it was fully engaged versus when it was managing, and in the three seconds between the phone lighting up and him reaching for it, something in him had changed.

the picked up the phone.

Looked at me.

“Eat,” he said. “I’ll be a moment.”

He stepped out of the kitchen.

late.

Or I held my fork and moved food around my plate with the focused application of someone performing the act of eating, which was not the same thing. My wolf hearing, which I had spent years learning to manage in pack environments where too much information arrived uninvited, did what it did in spaces with thin interior walls and someone on a call twenty feet away.

Fragments. Not a full conversation-he had moved far enough that the words blurred at the edges, became impressions rather than sentences. But the tone was clear and tone was what mattered.

A woman’s voice from the phone, higher than I’d expected, with an edge in it that I read even through distance and compression. Urgent. The particular urgency of someone who had been waiting to make this call and was now making it in a rush.

Kieran’s voice, dropping into a register I hadn’t heard from him before. Careful. Not the business careful, where precision was the instrument. Something more personal-the care of someone managing a situation they didn’t want to mishandle.

*I can’t talk at length right now. Clear enough to arrive whole. “I’m not alone.* A pause, something from her end that I couldn’t assemble. *I’ll call tonight. Later tonight.*

Then quieter, shorter, and I stopped trying to piece together the words and let the impressions go.

He came back in three minutes.

I was drinking my coffee when he returned, which was a better/position than the fork-hovering performance of two minutes ago. He sat down. Picked up his own coffee. His face had rearranged itself into the composed register I knew well, the one that was not cold and was not warm and was simply functional.

“Company meeting tomorrow evening,” he said. “It’s been pushed to seven. I’ll likely be late back.”

“Alright,” I said.

“Nothing significant,” he said. “Administrative.”

I looked at my coffee cup.

*Nothing significant.*
