DENISE

“The guest room is fine,” I said.

He looked at me with the slight quality of someone who wanted to say something and had decided not to.

“The study has a better desk,” he said instead.

I looked at him across the kitchen counter in the morning light and thought about how this had become ordinary—the kitchen, the desk, the quiet, the particular texture of two people who had built a shared routine without intending to build one.

“The guest room desk is fine,” I said. “I’ve been using it for weeks.”

He made a sound that was not quite agreement and not quite disagreement and returned to his coffee.

I finished my eggs.

The foundation documents took two hours rather than one.

This was not the foundation’s fault. The operational structure was actually in reasonable shape -Mrs. Adeyemi had been more organized than the orphanage’s visible infrastructure suggested, which was consistent with a woman who had been running a household of rotating children for thirty-two years on limited resources. You didn’t survive thirty-two years on limited resources without developing organizational capacity.

The two hours were my own fault. I kept finding things I wanted to annotate, sections that could work better with a slight reframe, funding language that was technically correct but could be made more precise in ways that would matter during grant applications.

I had been doing this-finding things to attend to, things to improve, things that kept the forward movement present and continuous-since Kieran had come back from Paris. Since the phone call this morning. Since the name on the screen had landed in the middle of breakfast like a small, specific stone dropped into still water, and I had watched the rings move outward and said nothing about them.

I was not going to ask.

This was a decision I had made in the first ten minutes after he’d come back from the call and had been testing for structural soundness since. I turned it over and checked it for the kind of cracks that appeared when a decision had been made from emotion dressed up as principle.

The cracks were not there.

The arrangement was documented and honest. Neither of us had represented it as something it wasn’t. He had told me, twice, that he would answer when I asked, and both times the offer had been genuine-I trusted the genuineness because I had gotten good at identifying performed sincerity and his didn’t have the texture of performance.

The question remained mine to ask.

I had not asked it yet.

I was still deciding whether I wanted to.

That was the truth I had been living alongside for the past week, the one that required more honesty to look at directly than the question itself. Knowing the name hadn’t made me want to ask the question faster. It had made me slower. Had made me look at what the answer would do with it when I had it, what shape it would change things into, and whether I was ready for any of those shapes.

The foundation documents were better by noon.

I sent the revised version to the lawyer Kieran had connected me with-a woman named Adaeze Obi, whom I had been communicating with directly for two weeks and had come to trust in the specific, empirical way I trusted people who answered questions with information rather than reassurance.

Then I sat back from the desk and looked at the window.

My phone rang.

Andrea.

“Tell me you’re not busy,” she said, before I’d finished the greeting.

“I’m available,” I said. “What happened?”

“Something good happened,” she said, and her voice had the particular quality it had when she was excited and trying to manage the excitement to a presentable level and not quite succeeding. “Something I did not expect to happen but that I am choosing to receive as the

“Tell me,” I said.

“Maison Frey,” she said. “The fashion house. They’ve been looking for a local consultant for their city operations-someone who knows the pack social circuit, who understands how the aesthetic translates in this specific market, who can work across styling and photography and client relations.” A breath. “They offered me the position this morning. Full terms. City-based.”

I sat up straighter. “Andrea.”

“I know.” She was doing the thing she did when she was pleased and wanted to be taken seriously about being pleased-reining it in, delivering it with more composure than she felt. “It’s-Denise, it’s real. It’s what I’ve been working toward for five years in Paris and it’s here and I don’t have to go back.”

“That’s exactly what you wanted,” I said.

“It is exactly what I wanted.” Her composure slipped. “I cried in the bathroom after the call.”

“You should have cried where they could see you and made them feel responsible for your happiness.”

She laughed. “I thought of that afterward.” A pause. “I’m celebrating tonight. Come.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere with good food and good wine and you sitting across from me telling me I deserve this.”
