The Marchetti meeting had been on a Thursday.

Marco had arrived at the house with the particular bearing of a man who had been told this was a formal occasion and had dressed accordingly without letting the formality make him stiff-a distinction I noticed because most men failed to manage it and became either underdressed or rigid, and he had done neither. He was taller than I’d expected from the photographs. Quieter. He had sat across from me at the dining table with my parents on either side performing their most gracious version of themselves, and he had looked at me with brown eyes that were doing genuine assessment rather than the performance of assessment, which was different and which I filed without commenting on.

He had asked me three questions over the course of the meal.

Not the questions I’d anticipated-not the questions about family or position or what I wanted in a match, the standard architecture of these conversations. He had asked me what I was reading. He had asked whether I preferred the city or the countryside and had listened to my answer with the attention of someone who was actually going to use the information. And near the end of dinner, with the particular timing of someone who had been waiting for the right gap, he had asked what I thought about the eastern boundary land dispute, and the question had been specific enough that I understood he had done research before the meeting, and the research had not been superficial.

He had opinions about the land dispute. Considered ones.

I had not expected to have a real conversation about eastern boundary land rights at a dinner designed to assess whether I was a viable match for transport to Verona, and the unexpectedness of it had produced something in me that I had spent two weeks not examining too closely.

I had filed it.

That was what I had done with Marco Marchetti-filed him, the way I filed things that were more complicated than I had planned for, in the part of my mind where things waited for a moment when I had the bandwidth to look at them properly.

I had not had that moment yet.

Chapter 81

Being the good daughter was not difficult in the technical sense.

I knew how to do it. I had been doing it in intervals my entire life-the periods between incidents, the recovery phases, the times when the most useful version of myself was the one who was present at dinner and asked appropriate questions and didn’t give anyone a reason to look at me with the particular exhausted disappointment that had become my mother’s default expression over the past six weeks.

I came downstairs at the right time. I attended the Marchetti follow-up call with the composed interest of someone who was genuinely considering the proposal. I had two conversations with Elena that were warm and real and required nothing from me except the actual warmth I felt for her, which had always been genuine even when everything around it was complicated.

I sat with my father in the study on a Tuesday evening and talked about the eastern boundary dispute-which I had now, since Marco had raised it, read more carefully—and my father had looked at me across his desk with something that was not quite surprise and not quite relief but was adjacent to both.

I had not pushed. Had not argued. Had not given anyone a reason to look at me and see the thing I was keeping underneath the good-daughter surface.

I was, apparently, a convincing good daughter when I needed to be.

What nobody saw was that I had not been idle.

The man Cyrus knew had a name I had never asked for.

This was deliberate. Names created connections and connections created traces, and the thing I had understood from the beginning-the thing I had understood when I was still in the hotel room and the plan was still forming itself around the edges of what I was and wasn’t willing to do-was that distance was the only protection that mattered if something went wrong.

Cyrus had described him as someone who was good at arrangements that needed to look like something else. Someone who had done work in the past that had required the particular skill of making a thing look like what it naturally could have been.

I had contacted him through the channel Cyrus had used before-a series of intermediate steps that Cyrus had set up and that I had simply activated, one message to one number, and then the subsequent communication had been clean and minimal and had proceeded in the businesslike way of someone who asked no questions because questions were not part of the

service.

I had described what I needed.
