St. Mira’s was in the east quarter, on a street that the city had been meaning to renovate for fifteen years and had not yet gotten around to. This was the nature of the east quarter-things that were going to be improved eventually, held together in the interim by the determination of the people inside them.
I had been there once, a long time ago. I had not gone for any reason connected to Denise. I had gone because Lyra Blackwood at nineteen had done charity circuit events as a matter of family expectation, and St. Mira’s had been on the list that year, and I had walked through the common room with the particular careful niceness of someone doing a thing they’d been told to do and finding it less comfortable than anticipated.
I remembered the building.
Old. Not badly maintained-there was a difference between neglect and the particular kind of aging that came from doing everything right with not quite enough resources, and St. Mira’s was the second kind. The wiring had been updated in sections over the years, patchwork improvements that were each individually sound but that together produced the specific vulnerability of a system that had never been addressed as a whole. The heating infrastructure was old. The back section of the building, where the storage rooms were, had the particular configuration of limited ventilation and accumulated material-furniture donations, clothing, the overflow of thirty years of well-meaning contributions that never quite got sorted.
I had researched this carefully.
Not using my own name, and not from any network that could be traced to the Blackwood family. I had used a device that had been purchased in cash and had been thorough in the way of someone who understood that thoroughness was the difference between a contingency and
a consequence.
The word I kept using, internally, was contingency.
A contingency was not a plan. A contingency was a thing you had available in case the other options failed. I had other options. I was pursuing them-the patient version, the version where time and distance and Marco Marchetti and the good-daughter interval produced a situation where Denise’s current position became less stable through natural erosion rather than direct intervention.
That version was slower.

That version required Kieran to eventually become what all the men in these arrangements eventually became-distracted, redirected, pulled toward the thing that had his actual attention rather than the thing that was convenient.
I was waiting for that version.
The contingency was for if it didn’t work.
I had been telling myself this for two weeks.
Tuesday arrived the way Tuesdays arrived.
I had coffee with my mother in the morning. She talked about the Marchetti family’s Verona estate with the particular enthusiasm of someone who had decided that enthusiasm was a useful tool for shaping my response to the topic. I listened and asked occasional questions and let her believe the listening was warmer than it was.
At ten my phone showed a notification from the secondary number-the one I had set up for the channel, the one that existed only for this purpose and was not connected to anything else in my life.
A message from the man with no name.
*Window is tomorrow. He has a meeting across town, confirmed 6PM, not expected back until late. The building will be at reduced staff. Your word or we close the arrangement.*
I put the phone face-down on the breakfast table.
My mother was still talking about the estate gardens.
I looked at the surface of the table and breathed with the controlled regularity of someone managing an interior state they did not want visible.
Tomorrow.
I had known the window was coming-he had told me, two weeks ago, that he would identify the optimal moment and give me forty-eight hours. I had known and I had been waiting and now it was here, on a Tuesday morning over coffee with my mother’s voice describing Verona in October, and I needed to decide.
*Your word or we close the arrangement.*
I picked up my coffee cup.

My mother had moved from the garden to the interior of the main house, its particular architectural features, its gallery.
I thought about St. Mira’s. The old wiring. The storage room in the back. The way a fire, in a building with that configuration, would move before it was noticed-the back section first, the storage, the accumulated donation furniture, and then the spread, the way these things spread in buildings that had never had their systems addressed as a whole.
I thought about what would be lost.
Records, probably. Thirty years of children’s files, the documentation of lives that had begun in that building and been managed through it. The heating system that Denise had been quietly funding for years. The donations-the furniture, the clothing, the overflow of good intentions stacked in the storage room where the ventilation was poor.
