I stayed still on my bed for quite a while before I brought myself to watch the clip again. My phone remained on the blanket, with the screen blank, it looked like it waiting for my decision. My mind was churning the facts it had observed over the course of whatever this was.

Eli was two or thereabout. He didn’t seem like a four year old. Kieran had been unmarried for three years. Alyssa wasn’t startled when he walked into that room or if she was she didn’t show. She treated his presence like something familiarly uncomfortable.

Eli had called him Papa. It was instinctive; the way a child called his parents because it was the natural thing for them to do.

I should be seething with rage but I was totally calm.

I was more surprised by my reaction than the discovery. I stared at the ceiling as I dug deeper. Why was I making a fuss where there wasn’t? After all, he never told me a lie. When we came up with the idea to married, there was no discussion of anything beyond the scope that it was an exit for me and a solution for him. Nowhere in that discussion had either of us asked the other to be transparent about anything beyond the paperwork.

Ugggh! I couldn’t say anything or ask anything because the contract we had agreed didn’t leave room for that.

My mind slowly drifted to the last few weeks, a lot of things that the contract didn’t leave room had been occurring: the way he noticed when I was cold, his hands trembling when he held me after the fire, like he’d been the one in danger instead of me.

If he was allowed that, even if the contract didn’t give room for it, then… The door opened before I could finish that thought.

“You’re awake. I thought you’d still be asleep.” He walked over to the bed.

I inhaled sharply. There was something different about his scent. It was the same but mixed with a twinge of something milk-sweet like a pup.

A little frown creased my forehead and beneath that, an omega and recently too, because the smell hadn’t faded. I had no need for the video anymore. There was enough compelling physical evidence.

“I’m fine; just resting.”

He sat on the edge of the bed. “I’m sorry I took so long. It couldn’t be help. Dante was making a scene down the hall. Security wanted me to deal with it before it turned into something.”

“It’s alright.”

I stared at his face. You were with your son. The words were on my tongue but I buried them before they got the chance to become alive.

I sighed. “I’ll talk to Dante. He needs to put a stop to this.”

“No.”

“Kieran!”

He cut me off. “You almost died two nights ago. You’re not walking into a room with him alone.”

I kept my voice even. “He was my problem long before he became yours and I want to deal with it.”

He didn’t answer right away. I saw the battle going on his head through his eyes. He was weighing the fact that we weren’t mated against his protective instinct for me. The sigh told me that logic won.

“Call me if he steps out of line and don’t meet him alone.”

“That’s reasonable.” I agreed to his terms.

“I’m allowed to be reasonable.”

“Of course.” I agreed.

I watched his shoulders eased and realized he had been ready to fight me on this.

He was quiet for a moment. “There’s something else.”

“Okay.”

“My mother moved the wedding up. She said there is no reason to wait when everything is ready. It’s in one week time.”

I was silent. The wedding had gone from a plan to a date on the calendar; I had a video I hadn’t shown him and scents on him that I hadn’t asked about.

“That’s sudden. I’ll need some time.” I said.

“That’s fair.” He reached over and covered my hand with his. “It doesn’t have to be complicated. If something needs to change, tell me and I’ll fix it.”

The words flew out of my mouth. “It’s not the ceremony. It is, not the way you think. It’s just closer than I expected.”

“You knew this was coming.”

“I did.”

“So?”
