The curtains were drawn against the morning and the half-finished glass of water on the nightstand, everything just the way I left it.
My phone rang. The caller ID said Cyrus. I stared at the phone longer than I should before I picked it.
I answered on the second ring.
“Go on. What’s the news?” I said.
His voice was flat. “She’s alive. They pulled her out of the building.”
I felt a blow to my ribs and nearly doubled over.
“And what about the children?” I managed to ask after some seconds.
“They got out before it spread. Nobody died.”
I moved backwards, finally sitting down when I felt the frame of the bed on my calves. The bed felt colder than it was just minutes before. I had swallowed twice in rapid succession.
Nobody died.
I didn’t know what to feel so I waited. I waited for the sharp sting of anger or the dull ache of disappointment but nothing came. I searched again like the way a person ran through their pockets when they were certain they came with an item.
I still had nothing after the search.
Cyrus spoke after he waited for what seemed a while. “What do you want to do?”
His question did the trick. The floodgates opened and I felt my heartbeat thud against my chest, threatening to break free. The room wasn’t hot but beads of sweat ran down my spine. The phone moved against my ear because my hands began trembling.
I wanted Denise out of the way so badly that I planned and paid for it. That wasn’t what scared me, what scared me was how easy it was. It felt like a logistical problem and not what it was.

:
“Don’t contact me about this again on this number,” I said.
“Lyra-”
“I mean it, Cyrus. Not on this number especially about this.”

I ended the call and opened my messages first. There was no haste to my movement; panic was for people who always thought short term, that wasn’t and had never been me.
I opened the thread of conversation I had with Cyrus and started reading. Anything that suggested otherwise and any coded message that would have appeared coded to someone sniffing around was gone.
After that was done, I went to my contacts lists. I deleted the numbers that I had saved as ordinary people that wouldn’t passed through a routine check much less a targeted investigation.
I went through the temporary account I created seven months ago. It was a cloud storage with a single folder inside it. The folder contained payment confirmations that was supposed to be untraceable, except that nothing is untraceable if someone is determined enough.
I thought about that and my mind went to Kieran.
He was going to look into it; I knew him well enough to know that. He had agreed to marry her on paper only but pulling her out of a burning building clearly told me that whatever she’d been at the start, she wasn’t that anymore. The investigation would happen and he would push it further than a police report and insurance claim, further than anyone else would think to push it.
He would look for who knew she would be there, who had access and check their motives.
He would eventually construct a chain and the chain needed to end somewhere that wasn’t
He would find the man I hired and all the evidence that proved he was the one that carried out the hit and that was where I needed the investigation to die a natural death.
Cyrus knew too much, not everything but he knew enough. He’d been the first person I’d spoken to when the idea had moved from thought to intention, and he’d listened without flinching.
He had been useful, but he was already becoming a problem now rather the solution he had been earlier. I didn’t let myself think further than that for now.
Marco’s message was still sitting there, below everything I’d been deleting. I noticed it earlier

I hope you’re well. I wanted to follow up about our second meeting. Let me know what time works for you.
I read it twice. It was polite and ordinary. The kind of way it sounded when someone was trying their hardest not to seem eager.
I thought about what becoming Marco Marchetti’s wife would mean.
My family wanted the marriage for the various obvious economic reasons. My mind went towards a different path: Kieran finding the chain and following it upward toward me, only to find Lyra Marchetti.
I would have two powerful families with every reason to protect the marriage and very little reason to cooperate with an investigation that would damage it. Kieran was powerful no doubt about that but even him would have a hard time getting to her.
I would still be reachable but I wouldn’t reachable as I currently was.
I started typing. Tomorrow works.I deleted it.
I’m free Thursday afternoon. I deleted that too.
