Serena positioned herself over Elena while she slept. Her instincts screamed to slip the knife into her throat now and be done with it, but if Elena had information on Samantha, then she needed to find out first.

She nudged Elena with the tip of the knife against the underside of her chin.

Elena awoke with a start, gasping. Her eyes widened when she realized that Serena was standing over her with a knife pressed to her skin.

“What do you want?” Elena whispered.

Serena pressed the knife a little harder against her throat. “Is Samantha alive? If so, where is she?” she hissed.

Elena’s eyes hardened. “I don’t have to answer to you.”

“No?” Serena pushed the knife further against Elena’s throat, savoring the way she squirmed. “Not even if your life depends on it?”

“You forget that Kade and I share a mate bond. A bond you’ll never truly share with him, no matter how much you try to delude yourself into thinking that you can be better than me.” Elena’s lip curled to reveal a hateful sneer. “I could mindlink him right now, you know. Tell him what you’re doing. Even if you kill me, he’ll know everything. You’ll never be absolved. That would ruin all your careful scheming, wouldn’t it?”

“So she is alive,” Serena whispered. “You didn’t deny it.”

“She’s dead. But I still know your secret.”

Serena hesitated for just a moment. But it was a moment too long; Elena, with a force Serena didn’t know she possessed, suddenly grabbed her wrist and twisted it hard enough to make Serena gasp. Her grip went slack and the knife clattered to the floor before Serena had a chance to use it.

A moment later, Serena could hear the guard stirring outside. She cursed under her breath and stood, taking a step back.

“Everything alright in there?” the guard slurred, clearly still half asleep.

Elena sneered up at Serena in the darkness. Serena’s heart thumped, terrified that Elena would call for help and Kade would find the knife. But to Serena’s surprise, Elena didn’t.

“Everything’s fine,” she called out. “Just dropped something.”

The guard grumbled in response, and Serena could hear him settling in his chair. A few moments later, he was snoring again.

“Come after me again,” Elena whispered then, sitting up, “and I’ll ruin everything for you. Mark my words.”

Serena’s jaw ticked. She stared at Elena, and saw no crack in her expression. The bitch was being serious.

Hissing through her teeth, she grabbed her knife and quickly left before the guard awoke again. She swore she could feel Elena’s smug eyes on her back all the way to her room, long after she was out of sight

Once Serena was safely inside her room, she locked the door behind her and leaned against it, briefly shutting her eyes. She needed to think. To come up with a plan-it was always what she was best at, and even Elena

couldn’t stand in her way.

If Samantha was alive and hiding somewhere, that was one thing. But if she had a friend like Elena in her corner? Someone who could help her reveal the truth to Kade? Even if Samantha was dead, Elena still knew the truth; she could destroy everything if she won Kade’s trust.

That was far worse.
