Chapter 110
Elena’s POV
The memory of Serena’s late-night visit to my room still clung to my mind the next morning like a bad dream. I could still feel the cold press of her knife against my throat, could still see the hatred in her gaze whenever I shut my eyes.
She might have killed me had I not thought so quickly.
I had to be more careful—especially around her. Now that she was suspicious of me, I knew she wouldn’t stop until she got what she wanted.
Kade called me to his office shortly after I had bathed and dressed. I feared the worst, but kept my head held high as my guard escorted me downstairs. I refused to show the terror I felt. Refused to reveal the truth to any of them.
“Sit,” Kade said, gesturing to the chair opposite his desk when I entered his study. I quietly crossed the room and perched on the edge of the seat.
A long moment passed. Kade regarded me silently from behind his desk, fingers tented in front of him. His gaze was searching, probing, trying to find any crack in my facade. I hardened my expression, willing myself not to
let him find one.
“We need to talk about yesterday,” he finally said.
I pulled my shoulders back. “I’m sorry for what happened to Ivy. It won’t happen again.”
“I’m not talking about Ivy.” Kade leaned forward, propping his elbows on his desk. “I’m talking about Samantha.”
“What about her? I told you everything I know.”
“Let’s start with the part about her slavery. What exactly did she tell you? Verbatim?”
I frowned. “It was a long time ago. I couldn’t recall exactly what she said. All I remember is her mentioning that she was wrongfully accused of her crimes, and that she was framed by someone else.”
“By whom?” Kade asked.
I wanted to tell him that it was Serena, but I couldn’t do that. So instead, I replied, “I’m not entirely sure. I just know that her family allegedly knew the truth and let her become a slave. They didn’t stand up for her.”
Deep down, I hoped that Kade would take my words to heart and question Serena and my parents. Maybe my mother, at least, would tell him the truth if questioned. It would be easier that way. Cleaner. It would keep me free from suspicion while Serena finally had to pay for her sins
But if that was what Kade was considering, he certainly didn’t show it.
“And where is Samantha now?” Kade asked.
“She’s dead.” I curled my hands in my lap. “Why do you keep insisting that she’s not?”
“Because of the way you spoke of her in the present tense. It’s suspicious-”

“Look,” I cut him off curtly, “even if she were somehow still alive, it would have nothing to do with me. I didn’t see her for months before she died. I only heard about her death after I joined Nightshade.”
“And that was when you decided to come here?” Kade said, eyes narrowing “To come and ‘check on’ her daughter?”
