Kade’s POV

Kade slammed the male into the nearby wall hard enough to crack the concrete. The male’s face blanched, chin. quivering with fear and dread.

“Say it again,” Kade hissed. “Call that dead woman a slut and a whore.”

The male’s throat bobbed. “I–I didn’t mean-”

“Save it.” Kade’s fist tightened around

physical abuse? I saw the scars and bruises on her body. Injuries that I never inflicted.”

“Tell the truth.”

Kade’s Alpha authority bled into his voice like a physical thing, turning the air thick and heavy with the command. All the Gammas in the room shot to their feet and began to speak at once.

“We only hit her when she misbehaved-

“I swear, I didn’t mean for it to leave a scar!”

“She was just a slave, and after what she did to cause your parents‘ deaths and your sister’s torment, we thought we were helping…”

A low growl rumbled in Kade’s chest as the Gammas admitted to everything. Beating Samantha. Humiliating her. Forcing her to perform the dirtiest and most disgusting chores imaginable with her bare hands.

Some even tried to rape her.

Just like Kade’s sister had been raped.

That was when Kade lost it. It wasn’t just that Samantha was his mate–it was the fact that Kade knew all too well the kind of torture it was for someone to be raped. He’d seen firsthand how that sort of assault could ruin someone’s life.

If only Kade had paid more attention, that wouldn’t have happened to Samantha. He still hated her, but he never intended for anyone to suffer in the same way his sister had. Not even the woman who had caused her suffering.

Even during the nights when he called Samantha to his room, he couldn’t bring himself to be brutal to her like the rogues had been to Debbie. In fact, those nights were the few when Kade felt like his old, gentle self again–nights of passion with the woman he now knew was his mate all along,

He didn’t think. He just pulled his fist back and punched the mean one so hard in the face that the male crumpled and slid to the floor, immediately unconscious.

Only then did Kade step back and release the male. He smoothed down his shirt, grimacing as the male’s blood smeared across the pristine white.

“Take him to the infirmary,” he ordered the other Gammas. “And as for the rest of you–get out of my sight and get to work. You’re all demoted to Omega status. I want every inch of the pack house sparkling by tonight.”

The Gammas obeyed and carried their unconscious friend away. Once they were gone, Kade’s Beta stepped into view.

“Why are you doing this?” Ajax asked. “You’re not actually beginning to regret everything now that she’s dead, are you?”

Kade’s jaw tightened. “I don’t know.” And that was the truth–Kade didn’t understand why he’d suddenly developed a conscience. Samantha had destroyed his life. Had destroyed his sister’s life. He shouldn’t have cared what happened to her, and yet he couldn’t seem not to.

“When is her funeral?” Kade blurted out.

Exactly one week later, Kade stood at the outskirts of the Stoneridge cemetery, dressed in all black. He didn’t want to attend the funeral but also felt strangely compelled to, so he decided to find a middle ground and watched from a distance.

Even from afar, Kade could perfectly make out that too–small coffin and the picture of her on the easel beside her gravesite. The priest was murmuring some prayers while Samantha’s mother wailed, her remaining daughter and husband standing stoically on either side of her.
