Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 111

Chapter 111

This close, my wolf wanted me to kiss him. And for a moment, I could feel the pull of the mate bond, the yearning to lean closer and press my lips to his.

But I controlled myself. Kade, for his part, seemed utterly unaffected by the bond, which only made him more terrifying.

“If I find out you’re lying about any of what you told me,” he whispered, so low his voice was hardly more than a growl, “there will be consequences.”

I couldn’t answer. I was too frozen. Kade straightened and picked an invisible piece of lint off of his shoulder.

“For now, I don’t want you going near my daughter,” he said curtly, turning away. “I started to trust you, but I don’t think I can now. And until I feel that trust again, you won’t be caring for her.”

My hands clenched into fists in my lap, but I didn’t argue. “I understand,” I forced out. I had to play it safe—I had to be careful. I had grown too bold, and now I was starting over at square one. But if I had to regain Kade’s trust to get close to Ivy again, then I would do it by any means necessary.

“You may go now,” Kade said without turning. I stood, forcing a smile onto my face even though he wasn’t looking at me, and sent the faintest thrum through the bond. If Kade felt it, he didn’t indicate it.

“I really do love you,” I said softly.

Kade didn’t answer.

I left after that with what little dignity I had left. Heading down to the kitchen, I bumped into Serena, who was sitting at the table with a cup of tea steaming in front of her. I started to turn around to leave right away, but she cleared her throat.

“I heard you fell from grace,” she chortled. “That was short-lived, wasn’t it?”

I glanced at her over my shoulder. “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

Serena giggled and took a sip of her tea. “You can deny it all you want, but you and I both know the truth by now: no matter how much you scheme and plot and lie, you will never become Kade’s Luna.”

I rolled my eyes. “Perhaps not, but neither will you. You’re not a saint, Serena. Far from it, in fact.”

“I guess I don’t need to pretend anymore with you.” Serena stood and walked over to me. As she passed, she leaned close and whispered in my ear, “How about this: you tell me Samantha’s whereabouts, and I’ll reward you with the position of Omega supervisor once I become Luna. Then, you can still sometimes see the baby you claim to love so much.”

I pulled my head back abruptly and stared at her. “I have nothing to tell you,” I said. “And even if I did, you’re the last person I’d strike a deal with.”

Serena’s lips curved. “Suit yourself.”

And just like that, she was gone.

Late that night, I was lying awake in bed, staring at the ceiling. After everything that had happened, sleep was a
