Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 113

Chapter 113

“What is it?” I asked without looking at her, pretending to be fascinated by a nearby shrub. “Are you going to stick me in the neck with a needle again?”

Nellie glanced around, then whispered, “I have a confession.”

“What? That you betrayed me and conspired with Serena? I already know that.”

She blanched. “Look, I’m sorry, okay? Serena promised to promote me to the position of Gamma if I helped her -I had to do anything to get away from my bullies.”

“And did she give you everything she promised and more?” I scoffed. “Or wait, let me guess-she pulled the rug out from under you at the last moment.’

“Exactly that,” Nellie sniffled. When I looked over at her, I was surprised to see tears in her eyes. “She told me that if I told anyone the truth about what happened that day, she would hurt me and my family.”

I didn’t doubt that for a second. “Why are you telling me this now?” I asked.

“Because…” Nellie glanced around again, then continued more urgently, “It’s gone too far now. She forced me to collect the herbs to make a nausea potion. I thought it was for you, but… As it turns out, it was for Ivy.”

“What?” I blurted out, whirling toward her. My guard perked up from afar, but I quickly walked over to another rose bush, pretending to have just suddenly changed course.

Nellie nodded fervently as she squished herself more firmly behind the tree. “I didn’t realize until I walked in on that scene the other day, but now I know what she’s doing. You see, Serena also had me craft an antidote.”

“An antidote?”

“Yes. She’s been giving Ivy the poison, followed by the antidote once Kade shows up, trying to seem like Ivy’s savior. I think she benefited from poisoning her the first time that she’s still doing it to gain Kade’s favor-only administering the antidote when he’s around so she ‘proves’ herself. But now she’s done it too much and Ivy is having a really bad reaction. The antidote isn’t working anymore.”

My fingers tightened around the rose I was holding, forcing a fresh drop of blood out of the cut on my thumb to swell up and drop onto the petal. I watched as the crimson liquid trickled down the stem.

I should have known that what happened the other day was Serena’s scheme-there was no way that such a small amount of expired milk could make Ivy so sick so quickly, and then the way she’d suddenly gotten better when Serena held her… It all made perfect sense now.

“I have to tell Kade,” I said, turning. The fury inside of me was about to burst; I didn’t care anymore what happened to me. If someone was hurting my child, then I was going to stop them.

But before I could walk away, Nellie’s hand shot out, catching my wrist. “Wait! You can’t!” she protested. “If you tell Kade everything, Serena will know I ratted her out-please, for my family’s sake, you can’t tell him!”

I paused, looking at the Omega. She seemed terrified. Genuinely terrified. I knew what that was like, to constantly fear everyone and everything around me, to feel alone and vulnerable in the hands of another.

Despite my instincts commanding me to tell Kade anyway, I decided not to expose Serena just yet. But I would
