Chapter 114
Elena’s POV
I managed to catch Kade coming out of Ivy’s nursery later that day. He looked pale and drawn and more tired than I had last seen him, and he was so out of it that he nearly walked right into me.
“Kade!” I said, grabbing his arm. “I heard about Ivy. Can I see her-”
“Not right now.” Kade pulled his arm away, although not roughly. “The healers are already tending to her.”
I peered over his shoulder, trying to catch a glimpse of the scene within the nursery, but it was no use. Kade closed the door before I could see anything. All I could hear now was the sound of Ivy’s constant fussing within.
“But I can heal her,” I said, growing desperate now. “You saw what I could do with her and Debbie. I could help.”
“Soothing is not healing.” Kade turned away.
“I can do more than soothe! I can heal!” I insisted. “Just give me a chance!”
Kade hesitated, glancing at me for a long moment. Gray eyes searched my face. But finally, he shook his head. “ No. For now, I’m only entrusting Ivy’s care to trained professionals.”
He walked away before I could respond, leaving me standing there, heartbroken and terrified. The bond I shared with Ivy seemed to snarl like a great beast in my mind, drowning out everything else. I couldn’t even think straight-my thoughts were entirely consumed by my daughter.
I had to help her. She needed me-the bond we shared had only strengthened over the past few days, and I knew, deep down, that only I could help her. She needed her mother. Her real mother.
I couldn’t see Ivy for the rest of the day, but I refused to let go of hope. By the time my guard took me back to my room that night, my idea had fully formed. Finally letting the tears spill down my cheeks, I threw myself at him and wrapped my arms around his neck.
“I’m so worried!” I cried out, my sobs muffled by his jacket. “Please promise you’ll let me know if you hear anything about Ivy tonight-anything at all!”
My guard just stood there, frozen with his arms splayed to the sides. He didn’t notice the hand that I carefully slipped into his jacket pocket. He didn’t seem to feel the sudden missing weight of the spare key I knew he kept
there.
“Um… there, there?” he finally said, patting my back awkwardly. “Everything will be alright.”
I pulled away, nodding and sniffling miserably. The key was now safely concealed in my sleeve. “Thank you. I’m sure it will be fine… I’m just so worried.”
My guard gave me a sympathetic look before he ushered me into my room and locked the door with the key that hung on the hook in the hallway. Once I was alone, I opened my hand and looked at the one I’d stolen.
This had better work.
I didn’t hear from my guard for another couple of hours after that, so I assumed he never noticed the missing
spare.

I waited until well after two in the morning, making absolutely certain that my guard was dozing off judging from the sounds of his soft snores outside, before I snuck out of the room. I turned the key slowly in the lock, cringing at every little noise, then cracked the door open.
He was sleeping, his head lolling forward onto his chest.
Taking care not to make a peep, I crept past and down the stairs. Ivy’s nursery was guarded at this hour by a stern-looking female Gamma that was pacing slowly in front of the door.
Biting my lip, I looked around, spotting a small decorative vase sitting on a nearby windowsill. It was risky, but it was better than not trying at all. I picked the vase up and chucked it down another hallway.
The guard stiffened and immediately rushed in that direction. I took the opportunity to slip out of the shadows and rush over to the door. It was unlocked. I slipped inside, not daring to breathe until the door was firmly shut behind me.
There, squirming in her crib, little face twisted and red with anguish, was Ivy,
I hurried over, feeling a pang in my chest at the sight of her that had nothing to do with the bond. Lifting her carefully, I placed my hand on her forehead and soothed her, I shut my eyes then, willing every ounce of my energy into her even if it drained me dry.
I imagined the warmth that surrounded her body cooling and slipping away, Imagined it dissipating like morning mist. I willed her sickness out of her, even if I had to take it on myself.
At first, nothing happened, My heart sank as Ivy’s squirming continued; I feared that my ability wasn’t ready yet, that I wouldn’t be able to heal her,
But then I started to feel it. It was unlike anything I’d felt before it was as if my power was pushing away her illness, as if I were crumpling it in my fist like a ball of paper, I could feel Ivy’s squirming turn slow in my arms, and a moment later, I could feel her little pulse returning to its normal rate.
The relief washed over me like a cool tide. Tears pricked my eyes, and I lifted Ivy, murmuring softly, “Don’t worry, my love… Mommy’s here…”
But I didn’t get to finish. Because the door swung open, and I whirled around to find Serena standing there, staring at me.
Serena’s POV
The scent that wafted from under the nursery door was familiar. Too familiar for the living.
It should have been impossible for Serena to pick up Samantha’s scent, especially not here, and yet… it was definitely her sister’s. She could sense it before she heard the shattering of glass in the hallway, before she lett her room in her robe to find the guard looking around in confusion.
The scent was one that Serena hadn’t smelled in some time–not since before Samantha died. She didn’t think she would ever sense it again, but here it was, permeating Serena’s mind. A piercing thought made Serena jolt out of bed and rush down the hall.
Samantha was here. With Ivy,
