Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 130

Chapter 130

Elena’s POV

“I’m not challenging your authority,” I said, standing with some effort. I had to lean heavily on my cane, but I met Natasha’s gaze steadily. “I’m just saying that if you’re so concerned about how charity should be your job, then maybe-”

“I know exactly what you were saying, girl.” Natasha’s eyes narrowed when the little boy entered the room, still munching on his orange. “It’s clear to me that you think you can walk into this pack and attempt to win my people over with gifts while simultaneously disrespecting me. You forget that you’re still below me, even if my husband and son took a liking to you; so let me help you remember your place.”

Natasha snapped her fingers. Melvin, of all people, walked into the room with a sneer. Sara seemed to shrink under his shadow and grabbed the little boy’s hand, yanking him away from the large Delta. The boy hid behind her skirt and eyed Melvin warily.

“Melvin,” Natasha said, “escort Elena to the packhouse. I have some floors that need scrubbing; and make sure she uses ice cold water.”

“What?” I blinked. “You’re making me scrub floors because I gave away some items to a rogue family?”

“I’m making you scrub floors because of insubordination.” Natasha sneered. “And if you keep it up, I’ll make you scrub the toilets next. I’m sure it will all be very familiar to you, seeing as how you used to be a slave.”

She spat out that last word like my slavery was an amusement to her. Like she didn’t know the true story of how I’d wound up as a slave.

I was speechless. Beside me, Granny stood, gathering her shawl tighter around her shoulders.

“Luna, we respect your authority, but this girl is unwell. Just look at her!” She gestured to my cane, to my pale skin, the way my knees were trembling faintly with the effort of keeping me upright. “She almost died just a couple of days ago. Does she really need to-”

“This is a Luna’s command. Who are you to challenge it?” Natasha’s eyes flashed dangerously. “Unless you’d like to join her in scrubbing the floors, old woman?”

Granny’s chin wobbled with indignation. “Why I have never faced such disrespect-I’m an elder, three times your age-”

I patted her hand, cutting her off before she could finish. “It’s alright, Granny. I can handle it.” Her eyes to me uncertainly, but I offered her a reassuring smile.

Really, I wanted to fight back against Melvin and Natasha. But I was too weak, and the thought of these kind people being hurt because of me made my stomach twist.

Natasha snorted, rolling her eyes at the display. “How quaint. Well, at least you finally made some friends of your own ilk this time.” With that, she turned away and stormed out, leaving us with Melvin. She made sure to take the bag of clothes with her.

“Come along, Omega,” Melvin growled, reaching for me. I tried to pull my arm away, but he snatched it easily and his grip was too tight to resist in my current state.

The walk to the packhouse felt interminable. My legs ached, and Melvin didn’t give me the grace to slow down when I felt like my lungs were going to give out. People stared as we passed, murmuring amongst themselves, but I kept my chin lifted, refusing to let Melvin see my pain.

By the time we reached the pack house dining hall, I was breathless and my chest was burning. Melvin shoved a bucket into my hands, cold water sloshing out and soaking my pants straight through. He pointed at the stone floor.

“Scrub,” he commanded.

I curled my lip indignantly at him but knelt anyway and dunked the sponge into the bucket. The icy water immediately stung my fingers, making me wince.

“Does it really need to be ice cold?” I muttered.

Melvin just folded his arms and sneered at me. “Luna’s orders. Unless you want a swift kick to that wound of yours, shut up and scrub.”

I grit my teeth and scraped the sponge across the floor, even though I wanted to fight back. I couldn’t. Not with my injuries.

I must have scrubbed for over an hour. I lost track of time eventually; the pain became so great from the physical exertion that the room began to spin around me, my vision fading in and out at times.
