Chapter 144
Elena’s POV
“She left me in the wilds,” Nellie finished quietly. She was sitting in the chair next to my cot, staring down at her lap with wide, tear-filled eyes. Many tears had already dripped onto her skirt as she told her harrowing tale, and each one made my heart twist for her. “With my wrists tied, not knowing where I was, in the middle of a snowy night…”
I couldn’t help it. After hearing Nellie’s story, all of my resentment, all of my anger, seemed to slip away.
I knew what it was like to be alone. To be scared. To feel like I had nowhere to turn.
Everything she had done… It was only out of desperation. The power imbalances had been great, and she had still lost everything despite her attempts to do her so-called “Luna’s” bidding. I couldn’t fault her entirely; if I had been in her position, wouldn’t I have done the same? If someone had promised me a better life when I was at my lowest, wouldn’t I have done anything to achieve that?
Reaching out, I took her hand in mine. She flinched, surprised by the sudden touch, but didn’t pull away. I gave her hand a squeeze and offered her a watery smile.
“You’re safe here,” I said softly. “No one will hurt you anymore.
Nellie looked up at me in surprise, then at Samson. He nodded. “You don’t have to return to Crescent Hollow. Not if you don’t want to. If you’d like to stay in Nightshade pack, you are welcome to do so.”
“Even if I did want to return, I know it’s not safe for me there,” Nellie whispered. “She said she would kill me. In fact, I think she’ll kill anyone who gets in her way. I’m lucky I even survived to begin with. We both are.” She looked at my chest meaningfully.
“What do you think she’ll do to Ivy now that she’s going to marry Kade?” Tyler asked. I loathed to hear the answer to that, but he was right. We needed to know. I needed to know.
Nellie hesitated. “I’m… not entirely sure. But whatever it is, I don’t think it will be good.” She looked at me again. “I think she wants to erase everything that reminds both her and Kade of you.”
“But Kade was extremely protective over Ivy,” I pointed out, although even as I said it, I wasn’t so sure anymore. If he was still going to marry Serena after everything, then he was either less protective of our daughter than I thought or perhaps simply stupider than he seemed.
“Even if he is, he might not suspect his future wife of such a thing,” Samson murmured. His fists clenched at his sides. “Men can be… blind when it comes to the women they love.”
Love. The word made my chest constrict painfully, and this time, it had nothing to do with my injury.
After everything she had done, Kade still loved Serena. And, as if to add insult to injury, he was going to marry her. Was he truly that blind to her true nature, or was he willfully ignoring it?
The math
But now was not the time to think about the strange, muddled feelings I had about any of it. I needed to focus on Ivy. My daughter.
