“Until the time is right?” I pulled my hand away, feeling hot tears beginning to prick at the corners of my eyes. ” What if Serena’s intention is to eliminate my child before the wedding? What then? The time is now!”
Samson’s face fell. “I know. Trust me-I understand your fears. I’m a father too, you know.”
My throat bobbed. “Then you have to help me,” I whispered, my voice thick and strained with the effort of holding back tears. “We can’t wait too long.”
“We won’t.” Tyler stepped forward and turned to Nellie. “Do you know the exact date of the wedding?”
She thought for a moment, then said, “November thirtieth, I think.” That was in just two weeks.
She paused again, considering, before she went on. “The first wedding was postponed, so I heard they’re going all out with this one. Lots of people from all over the territories have been invited. Many of the guests will also be staying in the pack throughout the festivities-I know that because all of the Omegas were preparing for the guests.”
I looked at my father and brother once more. “That could be a perfect opportunity to slip in without being detected,” I said.
Samson furrowed his brow, thinking long and hard. Finally, he stood. There was a resolute expression on his face that gave me some relief.
“I don’t think it’s a good idea for you to go there. But at the very least, I can see if I can send someone to search for her,” he said, patting my hand. “For now, Elena, you must rest. Can you calm your thoughts long enough to do that?”
“Ivy won’t benefit if you’re too sick to do anything,” Tyler pointed out.
I really wanted to run off to save my daughter right now, injuries and all, but I knew they were right. I was exhausted; my body had been fighting an uphill battle for days now. Finally, I nodded, albeit reluctantly.
“Alright. But I don’t want to wait too long.”
“We will protect your child,” Samson said firmly. His eyes lit up as he added, “My grandchild.” He leaned down and kissed my forehead. “Rest well, daughter. We’ll talk more first thing in the morning.”
With that, they all left me. Only Jayne remained in the infirmary, checking my vitals one last time before closing the curtains around my cot and leaving me to rest.
Of course, although I was exhausted, sleep only came fitfully. Every time I shut my eyes, I would picture Ivy in various awful circumstances that I didn’t even want to consider. At one point, I had a horrific nightmare made me wake with a gasp, which only added to the pain in my chest.
It was around midnight that I heard the sound of soft footsteps approaching my cot. I had been laying awake for some time, my mind racing too much to sleep. I expected it to be Jayne checking on me, or perhaps Tyler. I also hoped it wasn’t Natasha coming to exact her revenge on the evil stepdaughter she never wanted.
But then the curtain opened, and a face I didn’t expect to see peeked through. It was Sara-the rogue woman who lived with Granny.

“Elena?” she whispered. “Are you awake?”
I nodded and sat up a little, rubbing my eyes. “Yes. Is everything okay?”
She stepped into the space. “They told me you were in the infirmary. I didn’t want to bother you if you were resting, but I wanted to let you know that our boys returned from their visit to Crescent Hollow.”
“And?” I sat up fully, ignoring the sensation of my fresh stitches pulling.
“They returned with news about your daughter,” Sara said quietly.
The grim expression on her face made my heart leap in terror.
