Chapter 148
Elena’s POV
“Samson! Father!” I pounded frantically on the door despite the late hour, tears streaming down my face in torrents. “We need to talk! Please!”
I heard a grunt and shuffling inside the room. The door swung open a few moments later, revealing Samson standing there in his robe, his hair disheveled. “Elena?” He rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “What are you still doing up?”
“I’m sorry to wake you,” I sniffled, “but I needed to talk to you. It’s urgent.”
When my father saw the tears in my red-rimmed eyes, he immediately ushered me into his room. “It’s alright. Here. Sit.”
He guided me over to the armchair in front of his fireplace, where the wood had burnt down to embers. He was alone; Natasha must have been staying in her own room tonight after their argument.
I shivered as I sank into the chair, not from the cold but from everything else, although the throw blanket Samson wrapped around my shoulders was comforting.
“Now.” My father perched on the chair opposite from me. “Tell me what happened. Did you have a nightmare?”
“No.” I wiped my nose with the back of my hand. “I mean, yes, but that’s not what this is about. I’m worried about Ivy. I don’t know what to do.”
Samson furrowed his brow, but didn’t interrupt as I recounted Sara’s story. The more I told him, the more the color drained from his face until he had gone as white as a sheet.
“Do you really think your daughter is…” His voice trailed off, but he didn’t need to finish. We both knew what he was going to say.
Dead.
I pressed my hand to my chest, ignoring the sting of pain, and searched deep for the familial bond I shared with my daughter. But no matter how hard I searched, I couldn’t feel it there. Perhaps she was simply too far away to feel it, but it still terrified me.
Then again, wouldn’t I feel it if she had died? Wouldn’t I know if my own child was truly gone? I had to hold onto that thread of hope that if she were truly dead, I would know for certain. That the bond we shared would have severed and I would have felt it already-and since I didn’t feel it, that had to mean she was alive…
“We don’t know that for certain,” Ava whispered, always the logical one. I wanted to push her down, wanted to ignore her, but couldn’t.
“I… I don’t know,” I finally whispered out loud, burying my face in my hands as another quiet sob shook my frame. “But I can’t… I can’t sit around and do nothing if she’s still alive. We have to go to Crescent Hollow, and soon. Who knows how long she might have left?”
My father’s face darkened. He thought for a long moment, deep troughs forming between his brows. Finally, he muttered, “I was hoping it wouldn’t come to this… But perhaps it would be best if you told Kade the truth.”

I blinked up at him. “You mean…
“You cannot hide your true identity forever, Elena. If your daughter is still out there, then the only way to get her back is to reveal your past-only then can you claim parental rights and take her away.”
My throat bobbed. It was a terrifying thought, telling Kade my true identity.
“But if he loves Serena… He’ll never believe me over her,” I whispered. “He’ll try to make me a slave again,
Father. He’ll side with her-”
