Chapter 154
Ajax, clearing his throat, quickly said, “Another round?” Kade had hardly touched his beer yet, but he didn’t decline the round of shots that got passed out between them. The liquor burned nicely going down his throat, washing away the bitterness he felt.
When they were finished, the Delta leaned on the bar with his elbows. “So. About the wedding night.”
“I swear to the Goddess, if you don’t shut your mouth-”
“I’m just curious,” the Delta laughed. “Every Alpha and Luna couple is expected to have a little heir, you know? And with Ivy gone…”
Kade knocked back some more of his beer, wincing at the sour taste in juxtaposition to the shot he’d just taken. Ivy wasn’t gone; she was just being held elsewhere until she got better. Somewhere further from town, where the air was fresher. But they didn’t know that.
Only Ajax knew exactly what was going on; he was the only one who had been there during all the nights when Ivy was ill over the past weeks, and he had been the one to help Kade plan everything.
It all started when Ivy’s condition had worsened abruptly two weeks ago. The healers couldn’t quite figure it out this time, but whatever it was, it wasn’t looking good. She had lost weight, hardly slept, and cried all the time- even worse than before. She constantly spit up her milk and the healers even feared that she might suffer permanent bodily harm and even brain damage due to the illness.
Serena had insisted on keeping Ivy close, claiming that she could help nurse her back to health, but Kade eventually decided against it. He had decided, instead, to send Ivy away to a cottage out by the wall-with guards and healers surrounding her at all times, of course. He believed that the fresh air and being away from the hubbub that was constantly surrounding the main town might help her recover.
Deep down, although he didn’t want to mention this to anyone else, he also feared an attempted assassination- another poisoning attempt. Elena might be gone, but if Ivy was constantly getting sick like this, then maybe there was more than one person in the pack who wanted to see her wither away.
So Kade sent her to the cottage, where she was protected by only his most trusted pack members, and did his best to erase all history of her ever being in the pack.
He stopped mentioning her entirely. Quietly punished those who did. And if anyone asked about her, he said nothing. He cleared out her nursery and pretended that she had never even been there, and he locked up her personal paperwork in the safe he kept in his closet, which only he could access.
For all intents and purposes, it was as if she never existed.
This way, Kade hoped that whoever might want Ivy dead would assume that she was truly gone and would give up poisoning her. Only Kade and those he trusted the most-such as his Beta-truly knew what was really going
It wouldn’t have to be this way forever, of course. Even if Kade one day had children with Serena, Ivy would still be his number one heir-unless he lost her in the end, although he didn’t want to consider the possibility of that happening.
As long as Ivy lived, no children Kade had with Serena would become the heir to Crescent Hollow. Serena knew

that, and had agreed to it.

But for now, no one would know that. It was safer to keep Ivy’s existence as private as possible; Kade had already made the mistake of naming her his heir too soon and putting a target on her back.
