Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 185

Chapter 185

Elena’s POV

I tried to ignore the desperate sounds of Ava’s howls. I shoved my pillow over my face and groaned into it in an attempt to drown them out. I tossed and turned and stuffed my fingers in my ears.

But none of it worked.

Each time I closed my eyes, I saw that wretched look in Kade’s gray eyes, that hopelessness written across his face. I had never seen him look like that before. Not at me, and not at anyone.

As I laid there, trying to drown out the sound of my wolf’s anguish in my heart, I couldn’t help but wonder if I should hear Kade out. I wanted to know the truth about what Serena had said; I wanted to know if they truly had a child together, what had really happened to Ivy all those years ago, and what was going on with Debbie’s condition that he required my help so desperately.

It felt stupid, just as taking that right branch in the fork in the road had felt, but, like it had then too, my body moved before my mind could think. One moment I was laying in bed, trying to ignore the pull in my chest, and the next I was slipping out of my room and out of the house.

I had just barely made it to the edge of the main property when I heard twigs crunching behind me. Looking up, I saw a familiar figure moving across the grass, and cursed under my breath.

Natasha.

“Where do you think you’re going?” she barked.

I straightened. “That’s my business.”

“Not when you’re staying in my house.” Natasha gestured over her shoulder, and a moment later, another figure materialized from the shadows: Melvin.

I grit my teeth at the sight of him and instinctively took a step back, but he closed the distance between us all too quickly and wrapped his hand around my wrist in the exact spot where Kade had earlier tonight. Although this time, the touch felt like hot brands burning against my skin.

“Let me go,” I hissed.

“I don’t think so, princess.”

I pulled my head back as Natasha sauntered over to us, arms folded across her chest. The smile that curved her lips sent a shiver scuttling up my spine.

“Melvin, what should we do with her?” She tilted her head like a cat studying its prey.

Melvin grinned and said, “She looks a little weak as of late. Maybe some exercise would do her some good.” He released me with a shove. “Drop and give me fifty.”

I blinked. “What are you talking about? I’m not going to-“I moved to push past them, but they both crowded closer, refusing to let me leave.

“You’re not waking up the whole house again by running to Samson,” Natasha said. The giddiness in her tone

set my nerves fraying. “You manipulate him into siding with you every time; but not this time. This time, you answer to me.”

My teeth ground together so hard I thought they might crack. I did the fifty pushups he wanted with relative ease, although by the end of it, my arms were shaking and I had broken a sweat.

Admittedly, I had fallen out of practice with my training over the past year, although I refused to show them just how out of breath I was.

When I was finished, I stood, dusting off my hands. “There. Can I go now?”

“I don’t think so. One hundred situps. Now.”

“Are you-”

“Now,” Melvin repeated. The warning that flashed in his eyes made even Ava whimper softly, and before I knew it, I was dropping down onto the damp grass and doing the exercises.

But each time I performed one of the tasks, Melvin found me another to do. Burpees. Planks. Jumping jacks. Squats.

Nothing was ever enough. Even when my limbs were visibly trembling and I was on the verge of vomiting from exertion, Melvin and Natasha would just find another exercise for me to do.
