Chapter 19
Kade’s POV
Several days passed. Kade didn’t hear anything more about the strange rogue girl who apparently looked like Samantha, although the matter weighed heavily on his mind during that time.
Everything changed when Ajax returned for more information–or rather, a single photograph that made Kade’s stomach drop.
“My insider sent me this,” the Beta said, holding out his phone. “I thought you might want to see it.”
Kade took the phone and studied the picture on the screen. It was blurry as if taken carelessly or perhaps in a hurry, but slowly, the figures began to materialize as Kade focused his vision.
At first, Kade didn’t recognize the central figure in the image. It was female, yes, but had dark brown hair and wore a gray Omega’s uniform…
But as he focused his eyes, he began to see the similarities. The same height. The same build. The same curve to her shoulders.
This woman bore a striking resemblance to Samantha indeed.
Kade made a decision then; he would go and see for himself.
Samantha’s POV
Somehow, my actions during the match against the Delta, Melvin, continued to garner praise over the coming days. I didn’t expect everyone to remember the Omega who beat Melvin, but apparently, they did.
I realized that as I walked into the training grounds a few days later for my physical therapy session and received a round of applause.
“What is all this about?” I asked Amelia.
She beamed. “The Gammas love you. After your performance the other day, they think you’re cut from the same cloth as them.”
I raised an eyebrow. Me. The same as a Gamma–the warriors who used to abuse and belittle me in Crescent Hollow.
They actually thought I was worth paying attention to here. Furthermore, they were kind to me; that day, all of the Gammas offered me smiles and words of encouragement during my training, and even invited me to join them for their lunch break at midday.
I couldn’t believe it, but I also wasn’t complaining. It was nice to be accepted somewhere, not treated like I was only worthy of being the pack punching bag.
Over the following days, I spent every morning training with Amelia. She helped me start building up the muscles around my joints using weights, and even taught me some more self–defense moves. It was slow and hard work, but I enjoyed it.
On the third day, I arrived bright and early for my morning training. But as I entered the barracks, I found that the Gammas had all gathered by the gates and were dressed in fighting leathers.
“What’s going on?” I asked, finding Amelia standing near the forefront of the group.

Amelia turned to me and patted my shoulder. “Alpha Samson and Tyler are taking the Gammas out today for a field training exercise in the forest.”
My heart leapt. I hadn’t gotten to visit the forest since I was young–back when Kade and I used to be friends who would adventure out there. Back before everything went to shit. I’d always missed it when I was a slave in Crescent Hollow, but I never got to venture out because I spent all of my time and energy performing my chores.
“Can I come?” I asked.
“Sorry, pup. Just the Gammas today.” Amelia shot me a sympathetic glance. “But if you’re diligent with your training, then maybe you can come next time.”
“Alright…” I sighed and took a step back, knowing Amelia was right. Without my wolf and still in the early stages of my training, it was too dangerous for me to enter the forest. There were rogues out there and all kinds of other things to worry about.
So, while the warriors ventured out that day, I stayed behind and did my chores. I actually liked the tasks— everything was so much more laid back here in Nightshade than in Crescent Hollow, and I hadn’t seen Natasha in a few days, so she wasn’t giving me any trouble.
Around midday, in between my chores, I was passing by the infirmary when I heard a shout from within. Curious, I poked my head in to see several healers in their cream–colored robes gathered around a cot where an Omega was moaning and retching into a bucket.
“What’s wrong with her?” I asked, setting down the bucket of water I was holding and entering the room.
