Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 217

Chapter 217

Elena’s POV

“You know, you don’t technically have to wear those rags, even if you lose the bet.” Lana flopped onto my bed with her arms outstretched. “You’re the Alpha’s daughter. You can just tell Beth to shove her bet where the sun doesn’t shine.”

“No, I made my bed. I’ll have to lie in it now,” I muttered. But I still hadn’t given up hope. Not yet, even if the Alpha Ball was coming up more quickly than I would have liked, and I was still no closer to getting out of having to wear those rags.

I was currently on my hands and knees, crawling around on my floor like a woman possessed. I’d been at it for hours already-searching for something, anything, to prove that Beth had been involved in my dress getting burnt. I had gone through my room with a fine-toothed comb, practically tearing it apart in the process.

So far, I had found nothing. And as the hours ticked closer to the time we would have to leave for the Alpha Ball, I started fearing that I would have to wear those rags despite my best efforts.

“Well. Suit yourself, I guess.” Lana sat up and checked her watch. I’ve gotta go to training. Wanna walk with me before you give yourself scoliosis?”

I sighed, sitting up on my knees and rubbing my eyes. A little walk would probably do me some good. It was past noon already, and I had been on the floor like this, checking in between the cracks of the floorboards, for way too long.

Lana and I made our way to the barracks, where the Gammas had already gathered for their afternoon training. Lana jogged off to catch up with her friends, waving goodbye. I watched her go with a faint smile as I leaned against one of the fenceposts.

“Elena?”

I turned at the sound of the familiar voice to find Nellie standing behind me. She was wearing her pristine Gamma’s training uniform with her hair pulled back into a tidy bun.

“Nellie.” I turned fully to face her. She had changed so much over the years-gone was the mousey, frightened Omega, replaced now by a strong and confident woman sporting the badge of an official Gamma on her uniform. “Long time no see.”

“Tell me about it. I heard you had come back from your year away, but I never got a chance to see you.’

“Things have been a bit hectic.” I smiled and nodded toward the badge on her chest. “I see you’re no longer a trainee. Congratulations.”

She grinned. “Thanks! I took way longer than most to get my certification, but I finally passed my exams about nine months ago. Someday, when Amelia retires, I hope to take her place.”

“That’s a bold plan.” I beamed. “I’m sure you can do it, though.”

We stood there for a moment, neither of us speaking. Things had always been a little awkward between me and Nellie ever since… well, everything that had happened seven years ago. It wasn’t exactly easy for either of us to forget the fact that she had been an accomplice to my attempted murder, even if she had been manipulated and threatened into it.

But there was no bad blood between us. I was happy to see her thriving, and she had been nothing but kind and polite to me since she joined Nightshade.

“Oh, I heard about your dress, by the way,” she said. “That sucks. Rumor has it that a handsome Alpha bought it for you…?”
