Chapter 218
I blinked, taken aback. “What do you mean?” I asked. Nellie just grabbed my wrist and pulled me out of earshot of the others.
Lowering her voice, she said, “I was there when the alarm was raised about the fire. Amelia sent me and a few other Gammas to handle it. I saw something… odd when we arrived.”
“Odd as in…”
“Odd as in Beth climbing out of the bushes under your window.”
“What?” My mouth dropped. “What do you mean, she was climbing out of the bushes?”
“I didn’t have much time to notice,” she said, “but I caught a glimpse of her walking out of the bushes, dusting herself off. There were leaves in her hair. I thought maybe she had tripped or something. It never occurred to any of us that it was arson. Besides, who would be crazy enough to start a fire in the Alpha’s house on purpose?”
“She would be,” I said. “Nellie, this is great news. Can you show me where you saw her?”
Nellie nodded and led me away. We walked over to the house, where she showed me the bushes under my window. Nothing seemed out of the ordinary. The shrubs were still intact, at least from the outside.
But as I peered into the bushes, I spotted a few broken branches and some scattered leaves indicating that the ground had been disturbed recently.
Frowning, I pushed further into the brambles, scanning the ground for anything of note. Suddenly, I caught sight of something strange-a small, twig-like object. It was charred and curling on one end.
I picked it up, standing again, and held it up so Nellie and I could see. It wasn’t just a twig.
It was a used-up match.
“Nellie, you’re a fucking lifesaver,” I said, pocketing the match. “This is the proof I needed. Thank you!” Without thinking, I threw my arms around her, embracing her tightly. She stiffened slightly, but then patted my back. I thanked her profusely again, then ran off in search of Beth. There was no time to waste.
I found her leaning against the posts by the training ring, watching the Gammas go through their drills. Without preamble, I shoved the match into her face.
“Someone saw you climbing out from the bushes under my window,” I said, waving the match in front of her. ” And I just found this there. A little convenient, don’t you think?”
Beth’s eye twitched. “That doesn’t prove that it was me.”
“No?” I pocketed the match again. “Then what’s this?”
Before Beth could pull away, I grabbed her arm and pushed her sleeve up to her elbow. “H-hey!” she protested, but I didn’t stop. There was a long scratch on her wrist. The kind of scratch someone might get from falling ungracefully into a bush.
Beth went as red as a beet. She yanked her arm away, pushing her sleeve back down.

“That has nothing to do with this,” she said.
“Don’t bullshit me, Beth.” I planted my hands on my hips. “I won the bet. Now, you have to pay up what was promised.”
