Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 224

Chapter 224

Elena’s POV

“Mate. Mate. MATE!”

My wolf started howling uncontrollably now that Kade was this close. His scent was overwhelming, far stronger than ever before. The sensation of the mate bond pulling on my nerve endings made it feel like my skin was on fire, and it took all of my willpower not to stumble toward him like a drunken lunatic.

I tried to force Ava down, but it was no use. She was raging against the inside of my ribs like a hungry tiger at the zoo. If I didn’t do something quickly, then I might regret my inevitable actions. The supermoon was making me feel like I might be sick if I didn’t go to Kade.

I had to do something. Anything. So did the only thing I could think of at the moment-I imagined that cool blue, soothing energy filtering through my veins. The same energy I used to soothe Debbie and all the others.

I had never done that before. I had never used my soothing powers on myself or my wolf. Frankly, I wasn’t even sure if it would work, but I had to do something. I couldn’t just stand here, fully at the mercy of the mate bond, and potentially make a fool out of myself in front of a respected fellow healer like Harrison.

Strangely, it worked. My body felt cooler, calmer, like the gentle embrace of the ocean on a hot day. Even Ava calmed down, curling up and going to sleep.

Kade’s scent faded. The mate bond went quiet. It was still there, just like it always was, lingering in the distance like an unwanted shadow, but at least it wasn’t wrapping around my throat and making it hard to breathe.

I blinked, clearing away the haze that had covered my eyes, and saw Kade and Harrison still standing there. At some point, I must have backed up against the wall again, because the stones were soothing against my skin through my dress.

Harrison and Kade were both staring at me with different expressions. Harrison looked a little confused and, dare I say, shocked. I couldn’t quite put my finger on the other expression I saw in his eyes, but it didn’t matter.

Kade, meanwhile… I saw it. That flicker in his eyes that I had seen before with Tyler, only it was even stronger now. His eyes were still glowing faintly, gray irises rimmed with more than just gray-silver.

Like a stormcloud against the sun.

It was gone quickly, but I was sure it was jealousy that I saw there in that gaze. It made little sense to me; he had come here tonight with Serena. His wife and the mother of his child.

But then again, I supposed the supermoon made very little in this world make “sense”.

“Who’s this?” Kade asked, looking at Harrison.

The healer almost seemed to shrink under Kade’s broad frame. He glanced at me, clearly unsure of what to say. He could tell that Kade and I were mates, and that things were… complicated. As smart as Harrison seemed, it wouldn’t have taken a genius to figure that out.

“Kade,” I said, throat tightening, “this is Harrison. He’s a healer. We were actually just about to discuss Debbie’s condition.”

“Oh.” Kade’s brow furrowed, and some of his jealousy seemed to fade, replaced by confusion and maybe a hint of indignance.

“You can trust him,” I said quietly.

He hesitated, but then nodded. “I see. Debbie is my sister. She’s very sick.”

“So I’ve heard.” Harrison tugged at his doublet, almost like it was suddenly too tight on him. “I just so happen to be an expert in Luna’s Bane.”

“Really?” Kade’s eyebrows shot up.
