Kade looked at me, but I smiled and touched Harrison’s arm, making the healer jolt a little at the contact. “It’s alright. There’s a lot going on here tonight. Maybe we can talk somewhere private.”
“I’ll come with you,” Kade said immediately.
I glanced up at him and saw that look in his eyes again. That fucking jealousy. Like he had any right to feel jealous when his wife was around here somewhere, looking like a queen. Like they hadn’t replaced my dead daughter with one of their own, even going so far as to steal her name.
“Actually,” Harrison said, smoothing down the area of his sleeve that I had touched, “maybe tonight isn’t the best night for… in-depth discussions.” His Adam’s apple bobbed, and for a moment, I caught a glimmer of that look from before. Not hard, angry jealousy like Kade, but something else. Something softer. Kinder. And something full of surprise.
“Why not tonight?” Kade asked. “We’re all here. Time is of the essence.”
“Yes, but…” Harrison’s ears reddened, almost matching the hue of his hair. “Well, the supermoon is affecting me more than I expected. My mind is…” He glanced at me again. “Racing.”
I grinned. “Is your mate here tonight?” I asked. “I could help you find her. Or him. Whoever it is.”
“It would be a her,” Harrison replied with a slight chuckle that almost sounded more like a choking sound. “But, um… There’s no need. I’ve already found her.”
Kade took a step closer. “Who is it?” he asked, his voice low and tight. I was already looking around, hoping to spot the woman. As much as I found myself disinterested in matters of love when it came to myself, the thought always excited me when it came to others.
But Harrison waved his hand dismissively. “It’s not important.”
“Not important?” I laughed. “It’s your mate!”
The healer’s ears reddened further, but he didn’t answer. Rather, he slipped his hand into the front pocket of his doublet and pulled out a tiny, well-worn notepad with a leather binding. He pulled out a pen next that was leaking ink onto the fabric of his doublet, but it didn’t seem to bother him.
“Would you be willing to meet in private sometime this week?” Harrison asked me, glancing up at me through his brows as he jotted something down on his notepad. “We could talk in my personal study. I’ve got all of my notes there.”
