“Ah. I see you’ve gathered a crowd,” Mason said, handing me a glass. He grinned, and I felt my cheeks warm again, just as they did every time he flashed that award-winning smile. “It must be that beautiful dress of yours.”
“Thank you.” I accepted my glass and took a sip. The drink was cool, soothing my inner fires.
Mason turned to Kade and shook his hand, then did the same with Harrison. The latter was dwarfed by the tall Alpha, and he glanced between the two of us with obvious confusion.
“Kade,” Mason said then, draping his arm around my shoulders, “I’m so glad you came tonight. I was hoping to introduce you two. Elena, this is Alpha Kade of Crescent Hollow pack. Kade, this is”
“Oh, we already know-“I began, but Mason cut me off before I could finish.
“This is my future Luna.”

Chapter 226
Elena’s POV
I stared at Mason, certain I had misheard.
His future Luna?
As in, he thought I was going to marry him?
I had to have misheard him. Mason and I had only met a couple of times before-once at the dress shop, and then at home. And, of course, now.
I appreciated the gown he’d purchased for me, but marriage? Was he being serious?
Kade stiffened at Mason’s words. He looked like he’d just sucked on a lemon, his eyes flashing that familiar silver again.
“Future Luna?” He glanced between me and Mason, and his face darkened even further when he saw Mason’s arm wrapped around my shoulders. “You two are engaged?”
“No-“I began, but I couldn’t finish. Serena showed up out of seemingly nowhere, drifting out of the crowd like a giant pink cloud. The moment she saw me standing there, she rushed to Kade’s side and clutched his arm with both of her hands.
“There you are, darling.” Serena smiled demurely and kissed Kade on the cheek. The contact between them made Ava whimper again, but right now, I was too focused on what Mason had just said to think about jealousy. “I’ve been looking all over for you.”
Kade’s spine straightened. “I was… preoccupied.”
“I can see that.” She turned to me, red lips curving into that smile I knew all too well. The one that was sweet enough to anyone who didn’t truly know her. But not me. I knew what really lay beneath the layers of sugar and tulle. Hated. Anger. Bitterness.
Her smile stretched further when she looked at Mason. Serena curtsied and held her hand out to him. “It’s a pleasure to see you again, Alpha Mason.”
Mason, all charm and wit, took her gloved hand and kissed her knuckles. “Likewise, Luna Serena.” He tightened his hold on me; if I had had the strength and wasn’t so shocked, I might have pushed his hand away. “I was just introducing Alpha Kade to my future wife.”
“Future wife?” Serena’s gaze snapped to mine. Her smile turned serpentine again. “Mason did mention something of the sort when he visited the other day. I wasn’t expecting the woman in question to be our beloved healer.”
My jaw tightened at that word. Beloved. The way she said it made that old wound in my chest sting like she had stabbed a fresh knife into it, but I shoved the feeling down, refusing to let Serena get under my skin.
I opened my mouth to correct her, to correct all of them, but it was too late. Serena gasped, seemingly spotting someone in the crowd, and waved.
“Oh, it’s my old friend!” she exclaimed, tugging on Kade’s hand. “We should go say hello.”

Kade looked at me once more, his jaw tight. We all knew there was no “friend” in the crowd. Serena didn’t have friends. But she was already pulling him away, bidding farewell to Mason. She didn’t give me so much as a second glance.
The moment we were alone, I shoved Mason’s arm away from my shoulders and took a step back.
“What was that?” I hissed, not caring if I sounded rude. “You told them we’re engaged?”
