Chapter 26 Kade’s POV

“Who do you think you are?” Alpha Samson demanded, fisting Kade’s shirt in his hand.

Kade’s lip curled into an indignant sneer. “She’s my mate. I sensed her-”

“She has no wolf. She can’t be your mate, and even if she was, that doesn’t give you the right to waltz into my pack and assault her.” Samson tightened his grip on Kade’s shirt. “I should punish you right now for what you’ve just done.”

“Your reputation precedes you, Alpha,” Tyler cut in with a look that could turn the building they were standing in to ash. “Everyone from here to the furthest territories knows that your parents’ death turned you brutal and war- hungry. But I thought you would at least have the tact not to attack a helpless girl with no wolf.”

Kade hesitated, glancing over at the girl that looked so much like Samantha. So much like her… and yet not.

This girl… Her body was healthy. Full. Completely devoid of the malnourishment and cuts and bruises that Samantha’s body had been full of when she’d died. It had only been a few days-not nearly long enough for her to heal so completely.

Kade had to come to terms with it: Samantha was dead. It was impossible for her to have come back from the dead, and this girl, despite bearing a striking resemblance to her, wasn’t her.

“Okay. Fine.” Kade held up his hands in surrender even as his dignity withered in protest. “I was mistaken.”

Samson and Tyler exchanged wary looks, but after a moment, Samson released Kade.

“Get out of my pack,” Samson snarled. “Before I have you escorted out by force.”

Kade didn’t need to be told twice. He left immediately after that, and this time, Natasha didn’t arrive at the gates with another proposition.

But the entire way back to Crescent Hollow, Kade couldn’t stop thinking about that girl. Perhaps she wasn’t Samantha back from the dead, but… he couldn’t help but feel a strange, uncanny connection to her.

By the time he returned to Crescent Hollow, he’d made up his mind.

He wasn’t sure why, but he knew he had to have her.

“Send Alpha Samson a trade proposal,” Kade said to Ajax once they were back in his office. “To make up for what happened.”

Ajax nodded and flipped open his notebook to get started. “Any particular offers or requests, Sir?”

Kade paused, then said, “Offer him whatever he wants. In exchange, I want that girl.”

Ajax’s brows shot skyward. “The… girl? The wolfless rogue?”

Kade nodded. He couldn’t deny the urge-the girl was unfainiliar to him, yet so familiar at the same time. He had to keep her by his side no matter what.

“Our wolves sensed that you were in danger,” Tyler said with a furrowed brow. “We’re not sure why, but somehow, we knew that you needed us.”

“For a moment, it was as if you were my own child,” Samson added with a small, watery smile.

I wasn’t sure what to say to that. I decided to chalk it up to the bond we’d formed-I definitely wasn’t Samson’s daughter.

“Anyway,” Tyler said, handing me a cup of tea, “how are you feeling? Are you alright after that… ordeal?”

I took a sip of the tea, but hardly tasted it. I had to tell them the truth-there was no beating around the bush anymore. With trembling fingers, I set aside the teacup and turned to them.
