Chapter 63
Elena’s POV
Kade’s grip was tight around my wrist as he led me down the hall, away from the study, past his room, past the strange, empty little nursery-all the way to the end of the corridor, where there was a narrow set of steps leading up to a third floor.
I expected a dusty attic. Perhaps a nice, metal cage that was barely large enough to curl up in.
But I was pleasantly surprised-and very confused-when he opened a door and revealed a full suite.
“This room should have everything you need,” he said as he walked around, turning on the gas lamps. There was a twin-sized bed by the window, a small armchair by a little fireplace, and even an en suite bathroom.
There was nothing particularly extravagant about the room, of course. I was a prisoner, not a guest. But the room was well-appointed and comfortable, and there was even a window looking out at the mountain.
“You’re keeping me here?” I asked, turning to Kade as he quickly stoked a small fire in the fireplace. His movements were efficient, speaking to a man who had started many fires on his own, not always relying on servants to do it like I thought.
“Just until I decide what to do with you. I’ve mindlinked a guard to keep an eye on you. And don’t even think about jumping out the window; I put you on the third floor specifically so your legs will shatter if you try it.”
I clenched my teeth together at that. There it was; good old Kade, always having to get a dig in at every opportunity.
Well, at least I wasn’t being kept in a broom closet like my days as a slave. At least this was a real room, with a real béd, and I wouldn’t have to piss in a bucket.

A few moments later, the guard in question arrived a short and stout male Gamma who I had never seen before. He stopped in the doorway, standing at attention. “Sir, you called?”
“This woman broke into the house tonight,” Kade said curtly, gesturing to me. “Until I decide how best to punish her, it’s your job to ensure she doesn’t leave this room.”
“Yes, Sir.”
With that, Kade turned to leave. But I quickly called out, “What sort of punishment are you considering?”
Kade paused at the door, hesitating for a moment, then glanced at me over his shoulder. Cold gray eyes, tinged at the corners with the faintest hint of lingering attraction, flicked over me.
“I’m not sure yet. For all I know, you’re really a spy. Or perhaps you’re the woman I think you are and you’ve been lying to me all this time.”
“I’m not Samantha.” I planted my hands on my hips, hoping to convey the most confidence I could muster. I wasn’t sure if it worked, because Kade simply grunted and left.
Once he was gone, the guard looked at me warily before he left me, too. I heard the lock click from the other side, and judging from the occasional cough or creaking of floorboards, I knew he was keeping watch just outside.
And thus I was alone. Trapped in Kade’s spare attic room. A prisoner once more.
I wondered if Tyler and Samson noticed that I was missing-if they would come to free me. Most of all, I still didn’t know if my baby was here, or if this entire visit had been in vain. Maybe, if that were the case, they should

just leave me here to face the consequences of my stupid actions.
But not all hope was lost. There was a furnished nursery in this house; if Kade didn’t have a baby, then why would that be there? As far as I knew, he never prepared a nursery while I was pregnant.
Something about this wasn’t adding up. I was determined to find out the truth, one way or another.
