Chapter 73
Elena’s POV
I woke the next morning with a cramp in my stomach. A gasp ripped out of me when I felt wetness between my thighs, and I threw the covers aside to reveal that I had gotten my period in the middle of the night and bled on the sheets.
The door flung open before I could stop it. My guard, having heard my gasp, rushed into the room. His eyes widened when he saw the red stain on the sheets, and he quickly turned away.
“I-I’m sorry,” he stammered. “D-Do you need help?”
“It’s fine. It’s just period blood.” I stood and wrapped my robe around myself. “I’ll need clean sheets and some menstrual pads, though.”
The guard’s face reddened further. “Shall I… Get a female guard for you?”
I blinked. “Are you okay? Does blood make you sick or something?”
“No, it’s…” He glanced at the sheets again and went deathly pale. “It’s a woman’s thing.”
Oh. So he was one of those men. I rolled my eyes and simply told him to get me what I needed, then sent him away. While I waited, I cleaned myself up in the bathroom and pulled the stained sheets off the bed, along with my stained nightgown.
A few minutes later, an Omega servant-female-returned with what I needed. She helped me make the bed with clean linens and took the dirty ones away.
By the time I got dressed and emerged from my room, my guard had returned, although he barely looked at me. I ignored him, though, and headed downstairs. The house was quiet, and when it entered the kitchen in search of breakfast, I found that Kade was already gone for the day.
That was probably for the best. I wasn’t sure if I could look him in the eye for a little while after last night. The atmosphere had been more flirtatious in the end than I’d expected, and the dreams I’d had after… I didn’t want to think about them.
Since Kade was gone that day, I decided to see if I could find any information on my child. Last night’s dinner had proven fruitless in my search for answers, and I decided that if I wanted to figure out what happened to my baby and get out of here before Kade realized who I truly was, I would have to be proactive.
But it was no easy feat with my guard watching my every move. He followed me around like a wraith, constantly staring at me, always judging. When I tried to wander anywhere in the house that I hadn’t been before, he would be breathing down my neck like I was trying to steal the family jewels or something.
By noon, I had accomplished absolutely nothing. I had tried to slip away on more than one occasion, even just for a moment of solitude, but it hadn’t worked. He always noticed and followed me wherever I went. The only places where I could seem to get a moment to myself were my attic cell and the bathroom-both places where I would find no answers.
A little after noon, Nellie arrived to give Debbie her medicine.
“Oh! Hello, Luna,” she said, curtsying when she spotted me standing in the foyer, probably looking like a lost puppy. “I’m here to give Miss Debbie her afternoon dose.”
Nodding, I stepped out of the way to let her go upstairs. I still didn’t bother correcting her when she called me Luna”, if only to spite Serena.

But as I watched her ascend the stairs, I suddenly had an idea. I glanced at my guard, who was staring at the side of my head with a bored expression, and decided to go for it.
“Ooh! Oww!” I doubled over, crying out in pain and clutching my stomach.
My guard perked up and walked over to me. “What’s wrong?” he asked curtly.
“It’s… my stomach…”
“Eat something bad?” The guard looked unbothered. “Maybe you should lie down.”
“No, it’s…” I glanced at him. “It’s my period. I’m having a horrible cramp.’
