My guard looked around uncertainly. I feared he would say no, perhaps even see right through my facade.
But to my surprise and relief, he finally sighed and gestured to the stairs. “Fine. But I’ll have to wait right outside the door.”
“Oh, thank you!” I made my way over to the stairs, taking care to hobble and make myself look as sick as possible. By the time I made it to Debbie’s room, my guard’s face was completely red, partially thanks to my constant mention of clots and cramps and all kinds of things that men like him took offense to.
I slipped into Debbie’s room, finding Nellie bent over the bed, gently spooning something into Debbie’s mouth. My heart ached at the sight of poor Debbie, half-conscious, covered in sweat and clearly delirious.
Nellie snapped her head up when I entered.
“Luna! Did you need something?”
“Yes. I’m having horrible period cramps. Can you help me?” I made sure to keep my voice loud enough so the guard could hear me through the door.
Nellie nodded quickly and ushered me over to a nearby armchair. I studied her as she rifled through her medical bag for something to give me. She seemed timid and rushed, like she feared she might disappoint me, her “Luna”. Maybe it was for the best that she didn’t know I was once just like her. Maybe I could use this to my advantage.
“Here’s some pain medication,” Nellie said, returning to me with a couple of white pills and a cup of water that she retrieved from the en suite bathroom. While I took the pills, she rubbed a small heating pack between her hands, activating the heat inside, then gave that to me.
I smiled at her and placed the pad on my stomach, right over my womb. It was actually very soothing.
But before Nellie could walk away, I caught her wrist. “Wait.”
She looked at me quizzically. “Do you need something else?”
“Yes, actually.” I leaned in a little. “Nellie, as your potential future Luna, can I ask you for a favor?”
“Of course. What is it?”
“I’m… curious about Alpha Kade’s previous relationship. I heard that he had a child with his mate, but she died during labor. Is this true?”
Nellie blanched. “Well, I probably shouldn’t…”
“Please,” I whispered, tightening my grip a little around her wrist. “I just want to know what I’m getting into before I marry this man. And if I do marry him, I want to honor his first mate properly-perhaps bring a gift to her and her child’s graves?”
She hesitated, uncertain. I tried to keep my expression as gentle and open as possible, trying to look like nothing more than a woman who wanted to do the right thing. All the while, I studied her face for any response to the mention of the dead child. It felt bad to lie to her and manipulate her like this, but what choice did I have?
Finally, Nellie whispered, “Samantha was a slave. I’m not sure about her grave. It might be at her home pack.”
“But the child?” I asked, growing somewhat desperate now. “I mean, if it was Kade’s first heir, then wouldn’t he have wanted to bury it here? In Crescent Hollow?”
“I… I’m not sure…”

“Or did the child survive?” I asked. I hoped she would say yes. That my baby was alive.
Nellie hesitated again, but then replied, “I’m not sure, actually. I wasn’t there for the birth. At first, I heard whispers that the child survived, but now everyone is saying that it didn’t.”
“Is there any way you can find out for certain?”
