Chapter 86
Kade’s POV
Kade woke bright and early the following morning, and for the first time in a long time, it wasn’t the sun or his alarm clock that woke him; it was the pang in his chest.
The house was already bustling despite the early hour, judging from the sound of voices echoing from downstairs. The wedding was in preparation.
The wedding.
Kade sighed and rolled onto his back, staring at the ceiling.
Today, Kade was marrying Serena. He was marrying Samantha’s twin sister-she was, of course, the most logical choice. She was his dead mate’s twin sister, with whom he shared a residual bond from Samantha. She loved Ivy. It would look good for the pack to unite their families after all the strife.
There were so many reasons why Kade should be glad to marry Serena, and yet all he felt was dread.
He didn’t love her. He didn’t think he could love anyone, but he especially didn’t love Serena. And now, knowing that Elena’s escort would be driving away from Crescent Hollow any minute now, he realized even more just how little he cared for Serena.
But it really was for the best-for the pack’s sake and for Ivy’s. Kade didn’t have to love Serena. He barely even had to see her. He simply needed a Luna by his side, and she was the best choice.
Besides, he hadn’t cared about love since before Debbie was raped and his parents were killed. He had a pack to run, not a heart’s fires to stoke.
So Kade got up. He got dressed. And he headed downstairs, where he found chaos. The house really was abuzz with wedding preparations-he had told Serena to plan whatever she wanted, and it seemed she had truly taken that statement to heart, if the piles upon piles of chiffon drapes and succulent centerpieces and ornate seating cards were any indication.
Kade kept out of the way, retreating to the kitchen for a cup of coffee. He found Ajax, Priscilla, and Alistair sitting around the table, nursing their own cups.
“Alpha!” Priscilla shot to her feet the moment Kade entered the room. She rushed over and adjusted his hair. “Is this how you’re going to style it for the wedding? Loose like this?”
Kade pulled his head back and pushed her hand away. He’d kept his dark strands unbound, letting them graze his shoulders. “I’ll pull it back later.”
The Elder clicked her tongue. “You’ll need a stylist. You can’t simply ‘pull it back’ for your own wedding!”
Kade didn’t bother to hide the boredom on his face as he walked past the group and poured himself a cup of coffee, although he was pretty certain that Alistair and Priscilla didn’t notice. Ajax did, however, and sidled up next to Kade at the counter.
“I convinced Serena to keep the ceremony short. And if it’s’any consolation, after your wedding night, you’ll really only need to see her for important events.”
Kade gave his Beta an arch look. “You’re assuming I won’t want to see my own wife?
Ajax pursed his lips and held Kade’s gaze. Kade had no excuse; Ajax could read him too well. He’d always been able to do that, ever since they were kids. Kade sighed and turned away, glancing at the kitchen table, where

Priscilla and Alistair were arguing over the seating chart for the ceremony.
Serena’s parents swept into the room then, already dressed for the ceremony. Margaret looked a little less pale today, although that could have just been the makeup.
“There you are!” Jack crossed the room and clapped Kade on the shoulder. “The man of the hour. How are you feeling?”
Kade curled his lip, although a swift and subtle kick on the shin from Ajax forced his sneer into something a little kinder. “I’m looking forward to the end of the ceremony,” Kade replied curtly.
If Jack noticed the jab, he didn’t indicate it. He simply grinned and shook Kade’s hand, nearly making Kade spill his coffee. “You won’t regret this, Alpha Kade!” he exclaimed. “Married life can be difficult, but it’s worth it. Especially once you’ve got little ones running around.”
Little ones. Any Alpha should have been glad to have little heirs. But Kade just felt sick.
Once Margaret and Jack left, Ajax nudged Kade’s arm. “What about Elena?” he whispered. “When will you send her away?”
Kade turned his wrist to look at his watch. It was nearly eight, which meant that she’d likely be leaving soon.
He hated the way his chest tightened at the thought of Elena already being back in Nightshade pack before the ceremony was over.
Elena’s POV
I didn’t really have anything to pack-just the clothes I had worn here, the book I was reading that I decided to snag, and that pretty velvet dress in the closet. No one would miss it.
But as I stuffed these meager items into a bag, my hands shook.
Last night had led nowhere; I had almost gotten caught, and for what? I hadn’t found my daughter. Nellie was nowhere to be found. The wedding was in just a couple of hours, and I had no idea as to where my child was being
held.
This whole visit felt like a waste of time.
I feared the worst. If I left before I found my child, then what would Serena do to her once she married Kade? Serena would certainly want to ensure her own children were propped up as heirs to Crescent Hollow; what lengths would she go to in order to make that happen?
Kade hadn’t named Ivy as his heir, but it might not matter to Serena. Ivy was still a threat, and if Serena was ruthless enough to let her own twin sister become a slave to cover up her crime, then what would she do to the helpless infant of said twin sister?
I felt like I was going to throw up.
A knock came on my door. “Ten minutes!” my guard called. “The car will arrive soon.”
Ten minutes. Ten minutes to find my child and escape with her.
Yeah… right.
As I prepared to leave, I considered my options. Maybe the escort would be minimal; maybe I could escape before we reached Nightshade. But then what would I do? Sneak back into Crescent Hollow on the day of a wedding, when

security was tightest, and track down a baby that could be literally anywhere? They’d catch me before I even reached the gates.
