Rebirth of the Alpha's Slave Mate (Samantha and Kade) novel Chapter 87

Chapter 87

Elena’s POV

I followed Nellie out of the room and down the stairs. The house was buzzing with activity as servants prepared for the wedding, but perhaps that was a good thing-no one noticed us as we rushed out through the servants’ entrance at the back of the house.

“Where are we going?” I asked as Nellie pulled me along the side of the house. The morning air was cool and crisp, but it did nothing to calm the heat flushing through me. My child-my child-might be within my reach.

Nellie glanced around furtively, then pulled me around the corner of the house to the outdoor entrance to the cellar. “I think the baby is being kept down there,” she said, slipping a key from her pocket and unlocking the padlock on the double doors. “I found out that one of the healers has been going down there to take care of the baby. I had to steal the key, so we’ll need to be quick.”

My heart leapt into my throat. Was my child really right under the house, quite literally right under my nose, this entire time?

Kade put her in the fucking cellar?

Anger shot through me at the thought of my little girl being kept in a cold, dank, dark basement, but I shoved those feelings away for now and helped Nellie open the doors. The scent of musty earth immediately filled my nostrils, and beyond the stairs leading down underground was nothing but darkness.

“You’re sure she’s down there?” I breathed, peering into the void beyond.

Nellie nodded and hiked up the skirt of her uniform as she began to descend. “I’m positive.” She held her hand out to me and helped me down. We closed the doors over our heads, and the stairwell went completely dark.

Nellie fumbled for a moment, then produced a flashlight and flicked it on. The pale light illuminated the hanging cobwebs, damp packed dirt floors, and crumbling stone walls.

I shuddered at the idea of my child being locked up down here like a disappointment. Like an unwanted burden.

But as we made our way down the steps, my heart leapt once more-the sound of a baby’s soft coos echoed from up ahead.

“Ivy!” I gasped, rushing forward. I stopped in my tracks and let out a sound of distress and awe in equal measure as I saw her.

There, laying on the floor in a wicker basket, illuminated by a single shaft of light coming from a hole in the ceiling overhead, was…

My child.

Tears instantly pricked my eyes when I saw her tiny form wriggling there. My baby, my little girl… I hardly dared to move toward her for fear of the vision fading like a mirage in the heat of the desert.

Slowly, I took one step toward her, then another. Her little fists waved in the air as if beckoning to me, and I hurried over, dropping to my knees. My hands shook as they hovered over her, afraid to touch her, afraid to lift her.

My child. My sweet girl with a name of poison.

Ivy.

She was alive. Real. Solid. And she was here, looking up at me with my eyes, my blue eyes… And she was smiling.
