Elena’s POV
Ajax was silent as he led me back to my room. Each step felt like a death sentence, like walking toward my doom. I feared the worst-feared that Kade might see right through my bluff, perhaps even realize who I truly was, and punish me in the most severe of ways.
As Ajax unlocked my door, I glanced at him. “Am I going to be punished?” I asked, wringing my hands worriedly. Is Kade-”
“I don’t know.” Ajax opened the door and gestured for me to enter. “Wait here for the Alpha’s decision.”
And just like that, I was alone again. The Beta closed the door behind me and locked it, and the last thing I heard was the sound of his footsteps receding.
I immediately rushed over to the window, looking out. For several long minutes, nothing happened. Then, I saw Kade emerge from the cellar, still holding Ivy in his arms.
My heart thudded at the sight of my little girl. From here, seeing her felt like a blessing-she was alive, thank the Goddess!–but also a curse. I had been so close to holding her, so close, and yet I hadn’t gotten the chance before Nellie betrayed me. Now, I might never get that chance. I might die never getting to know the feeling of my little one pressed against my heart.
The thought sent a fresh wave of anguish through me, but I couldn’t tear my gaze away from the window. Clutching the curtains in tight fists, I watched Kade walk across the lawn, eventually disappearing around the corner of the house.
Then, a few minutes later, I saw her.
Serena. Emerging from the cellar in her ridiculous wedding dress.
”
She looked pissed. I knew my sister well enough to be able to tell when she was angry from the way her shoulders bunched up toward her ears, her rapid steps, the way her hands curled and uncurled into fists at her sides.
Nellie was with her, too, jogging to keep up. They were talking-likely collaborating on their next big plan. I felt my lip curl with hatred as I watched the two of them together. I could understand Nellie not wanting to help me, a stranger who misled her into thinking that I was Kade’s future Luna, but to work against me with Serena, of all people? It was preposterous and cruel.
But then, to my surprise, Serena stopped and turned toward Nellie. She jammed her finger into Nellie’s chest, making the Omega stumble back. They exchanged some words, and Serena towered over Nellie, intimidating her.
Nellie scurried away soon after that, and Serena stood there for a moment. When her head whipped up toward my window, I finally retreated into my room, wondering what I’d just witnessed.
Maybe Nellie wasn’t as willing of a participant in everything as I once thought.
I stayed there in my room for what felt like hours. Eventually, wanting to look presentable in case Kade showed up, I washed the dirt from under my nails and peered at the injection site on my neck in the bathroom mirror. There was a faint red mark, and I still felt woozy, but otherwise I felt fine.
At least Nellie and Serena hadn’t conspired to inject me with a fatal dose of something. But would my new fate be worse than that?
Even though it felt silly, I dabbed a little perfume onto my neck and combed my hair just in case Kade showed up. I wanted to keep up my appearance as a woman who wanted him-not the terrified mother who wanted to steal Ivy

away.
Finally, my door unlocked. I stiffened, heart leaping into my throat, as Kade’s familiar scent wafted through the door.
He was here to punish me, wasn’t he?
When the door opened and he stepped in, however, I was surprised to find him holding a tray of… food? A sandwich and a cup of tea. He didn’t look at me as he strode into my room and walked over to the small table, setting it down.
