“It’s not poisoned,” Kade grunted as if reading my mind when I lifted the bread to look inside.
My cheeks flushed. I supposed that Kade wouldn’t bother poisoning me with a sandwich if he wanted to kill me, so I sat down and took a bite. It did soothe some of my nausea, although I found it hard to eat more than that.
Chewing and swallowing, I set the sandwich back down on the plate and turned to him.
“What are you going to do to me?” I whispered. I didn’t bother hiding the terror in my voice this time, although I hoped it wouldn’t remind him too much of the way I used to tremble in front of him as a slave.
Surprisingly, Kade pulled the chair out across from me and sat. Gray eyes met mine across the table, and my heart leapt into my throat.
I saw no anger there. No hatred. Only a desire to understand.
“Why were you really with Ivy today?” he asked. His voice was calm and collected, and somehow, that was more terrifying than if he’d been shouting.
I still couldn’t tell him the full truth, of course. I never could. So I decided to stick to my previous story, and straightened my spine, looking at him head-on.
“I love you,” I said, hating the sound of those words on my tongue. I certainly didn’t love him. I still hated him for everything. But I forced the words out anyway and hoped they were convincing. “And I love Ivy like my own daughter. I panicked when I held her, and I couldn’t bear the thought of being forced to leave her, so-”
“So you ran,” Kade finished for me, leaning back in his chair and crossing his legs under the table. “Yes, you already said all of that. But if you love her so much, then why do something that could make you seem like a villain?”
“Like I said, I panicked. Besides, maybe a part of me…” I clenched my fists under the table. “I knew you were in the middle of your wedding ceremony with Serena. Maybe I hoped you would stop the ceremony to search for me.”
Kade’s jaw feathered. “Is that really it?”
I nodded slowly, not daring to speak.
Kade stared at me for a long moment. His gray eyes searched my face, searched for a crack in my mask. He would find none. I forced my true emotions, my hatred and resentment and bitterness, deep down where he could never sense it. I showed him nothing but the face of a heartbroken woman who couldn’t bear the thought of her mate marrying another.
Finally, Kade seemed to buy it and stood.
“Very well. I won’t punish you for what you’ve done.”
“Really?” I blurted out, surprised. I’d expected at least some kind of punishment, but nothing at all felt too good to be true.
“Really.” Kade turned and walked over to the door. “But if you pull another stunt like this, just one, I won’t be so
kind.”
I stood, gripping the edge of the table. “So does that mean I can stay?” I asked, not bothering to hide the desperation in my voice this time. If I could stay, then maybe that meant I could be close to my daughter.
Kade glanced at me, pausing by the door. “You may stay in Crescent Hollow for now.”
