Elena’s POV
The following morning, I woke to a fresh feeling of hope simmering in my chest. Kade hadn’t sent me away-he would let me remain in Crescent Hollow. With my child.
After seeing Ivy for the first time, feeling that undeniable mother-daughter bond between us, I was even more determined now to stay by her side by any means necessary. Even if it meant having to be close to Serena and Kade, I would do it.
I woke bright and early, hoping to have a chance to see Ivy that day. I dressed and hurried downstairs, only to bump into Serena as she emerged from her room.
“Oh. It’s you.” Serena froze when she saw me, eyes flicking over me with obvious dislike. She folded her arms. Aren’t you supposed to be locked up in your cell, little bird?”

I bristled indignantly at her condescending tone but calmly gestured to my guard standing at the end of the hall and said, “I haven’t been punished despite what you clearly want. I’m still allowed free roam of the house.”
Serena exhaled sharply; I couldn’t tell if it was a laugh or a grunt of disapproval. Maybe both.
“Well,” she said, tossing a golden curl over her shoulder, “you’re still a prisoner, clearly, if your guard still has to follow your every move.’
She was right, even if I didn’t want to admit it. I was getting somewhat used to my guard’s constant, silent presence by now, but it was a bitter reminder of my true place here.
For now, I was still an outsider in the pack. And even if Kade hadn’t punished me, I still wasn’t sure if I could see my daughter because of how little he trusted me. Perhaps my performance yesterday had been convincing, but what if Kade still refused to let me near Ivy?
Still, not wanting to show Serena that her words bothered me, I lifted my chin and said coolly, “It’s only temporary. Kade and I are mates—even you won’t be able to stand between us for long.”
Serena’s eyes flashed. “Don’t forget that Kade is marrying me. Not you.”
I tilted my head, studying her. I took note of the clench of her jaw, the hatred in her eyes. But there was something else there, too. Beneath the anger was a deep sense of insecurity that I could prod at and expose with just a few simple words.
“And yet he postponed your wedding for me,” I said.
Serena stiffened.
Knowing my words had hit their mark, I moved to brush past her, but Serena growled low and grabbed my wrist, yanking me back. I turned, calmly meeting her gaze.
“Go ahead,” I whispered, leaning close. “Attack me. It’ll be easier to reveal your true nature this way than having to gather proof of you conspiring against me.”
Serena paused, fingers tightening around my wrist. I knew my sister well enough to know that she was struggling to control her urge to hurt me. Her palm twisted around my wrist, starting to burn the skin with the friction, but I refused to show a reaction.
Good. Let her lose control. Let her show her true colors so easily.

But just then, the sound of a scream caused us both to turn. It was shrill and panicked, and was coming from Debbie’s room.
