Chapter 96
“Debbie!” Kade was kneeling over her, trying to pin her to the bed by her shoulders, but it was no use. Her hand shot out and grabbed a cup on her bedside table, which she hurled at his head.
Kade, Serena, and I just barely ducked in time. The cup sailed past all three of us before finally crashing against the wall directly behind me, sending shards of glass and water droplets everywhere.
“Leave!” Kade shouted over his shoulder, noticing our presence for the first time. “She’s too dangerous when she’s like this!”
Serena immediately turned to leave. But I didn’t budge.
“You have to help her,” Ava cried in my mind, desperate. “She can’t go on like this!”
“But I can’t heal her! We already tried-”
“Perhaps not, but you can soothe her.”
Soothe her. Right. I could do that-I could at least ease her from the nightmare she was reliving in her mind.
Brushing past Serena, I hurried over to the bed. Up close, I could see beads of sweat forming on Kade’s temples as he struggled to restrain his sister. He did a double-take when he saw me standing there.
“What are you doing?” he hissed as I reached for her head. “She’ll bite you!”
“She won’t.” I gently pressed my hand to her forehead, wincing at the hot, sweaty skin. She was running a high fever. Shutting my eyes, I willed my wolf’s power into my hand, into that point of contact, and imagined it streaming into her mind like a flow of cool blue energy.
For a moment, nothing happened. But then, I felt Debbie’s skin begin to cool beneath my palm, and her thrashing slowed. She sank back down onto the mattress, eyes rolling back to their normal position to reveal beautiful gray irises for a brief second, and then they fluttered shut.
Debbie exhaled as if relieved, mouth twitching into the faintest of smiles, then slipped off to sleep in an instant.
Kade, still holding her shoulders, stared at his sister in shock. Then at me.
“What did you just do?”
I let my hand rest on Debbie’s forehead for another moment before I took a step back and met Kade’s gaze. The concern I saw there for his sister took me aback for a second; I’d never seen him look so genuinely worried about anyone before.
It was almost breathtaking, seeing him like that. For a moment, I could have sworn I saw an image of a different man in him. Almost as if, beneath the mask of coldness and distance, was a young man who simply cared for his family. A man who loved and hurt and yearned just as much as anyone else.
Not a monster.
“Elena?” Kade released Debbie almost hesitantly, ensuring she was still resting, then stood. “What did you do?”
Composing myself, I said, “I… Have an ability to soothe the sick. I’m not entirely sure why I can do it.” Of course I knew, but I didn’t want to reveal that my wolf was Silver, so I kept it vague. “I’ve been able to do it for as long as I can remember.”
Kade blinked in disbelief. But when he looked back over at Debbie, who was still peacefully sleeping, his disbelief seemed to turn into intrigue.
